The Lumix L10 is Lumix's newest compact camera, and in this video I compare it to the FujiFilm X100VI which has been my favorite compact camera since launch. Some people say it’s just a re-release of the Lumix LX100 line, or of the Leica D-Lux 8, but I don’t think that’s true. I also want to get some other thoughts off my chest, many people don’t understand who is camera is for. In our little camera nerd bubble we love to focus on the tiniest details in the spec sheet, but the real competition isn't between the Fujifilm X100VI, Lumix L10, Ricoh GR IV, Leica Q3, and Sony RX1R iii. It's between these cameras and the smartphone you already own. In this long-term review, I talk about why a zoom lens actually makes the L10 a better everyday travel camera (at least for me) than a fixed prime like the Ricoh GR IIIx or Leica Q series, and why this camera might not be for you, or fit many photographers out there. But for me, it’s my new favorite compact street photography camera. So much so that I brought it as my only camera for a 6 week trip through Japan.

This is such a good compelling argument. A lot of people.
Forget what these cameras are made for.

I highly resonate with your "Lisa"-persona. Fell into the rabbit hole of compact cameras and all these photography channels are super awesome, but I feel so out of place, because I often have no idea what which specs even mean. Glad to be here and to learn tho. Thank you so much for seeing us!

Spot on. I had one pre-ordered, but decided to pass for technical reasons. I told my local camera shop I would pay for it if they couldn't sell it within 2 weeks because I would have enjoyed using it even with its flaws. They sold it immediately. I shoot a variety of sensor sizes and simply want a new MFT that will work with my lense collection. For most people who aren't camera nerds or sports/wildlife photographers I think this would be a very nice camera.

A fair review demonstrating lots of useful features for a price…

Good review!

For myself, I just can’t justify this for a reasons:

1. It’s not small
2. It’s not cheap.
3. I can’t afford to have multiple > $1000 dollar cameras, so for me I prefer a little more versatility on my main camera body. For me right now, it’s the OM-3.

I could see myself scooping one of these up a few years from now when it’s like $800 dollars or less. It’s a really cool camera and I think I’d really enjoy using it.

I am buying the L10 even though I have a Nikon Z7 with multiple lenses. For me, it’s weight, time limitations, and space considerations while traveling. When I go to Alberta for the sole purpose of photography, I’ll pack and lug my Nikon. But if I travel to mostly cityscapes with few landscape opportunities, I’m taking the L10.

Lumix didn't sponsored me. They just presented me completely new camera. yeah, of course :)

I purchased the L-10 by trading in my Fuji S-X10 + XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS. The price I paid was about half the price of the L-10 alone.
While the iPhone is probably a great camera, I don't use my phone's camera for anything other than taking notes, so the L-10 is the right choice for me.

Started with the LX3, got the LX5, nice upgrade, slightly longer tele range, got the LX100, much bigger, totally different camera than the LX5. Now the L10 is yet again bigger than the LX100...

I think it is a great machine for what it is, and as you said, for the target consumers. I DO wish they would make a similar body with a Micro 4/3 lens mount, IBIS, and a headphone jack. I would not care if it were a bit bigger. Ah, well, for the same price, I should just buy a G9 Mark II body and use my existing m43 lenses. Or, for a few hundred more, I should just buy a GH7. The appeal of the L10 is definitely the "not-a-phone, still easy to use, more [photographically] capable" factor. It has a deep, versatile feature set even advanced photographers can appreciate.

Great vid. What flash was used at 2:00? And was that straight out of camera (maybe with LUT)?

@tinyman392 1 month ago

If you take the specs of the lens and adjust for crop factor, you end up with a 24-75 f4-6 (ish) lens on a 20MP sensor…. In APS-C terms, it’s closer to 16-50 f2.8-4. Both of those tend to actually beat out the DoF you’d get from a kit lens on those respective systems. Granted, you are limited to 20MP. My preference with the X100VI is to run it with the TCL on to get the 50mm f2 equivalent setup. At that range, separation of subject and background becomes much easier with subjects that are larger (like humans). But if you crop, you can still zoom in to 75mm and still have 17MP left over to play with. It’s not the 20MP that you’ll get with the L10. But applying for crop factor it’s still 75mm f3 (~f2 if you compare to MFT). But you do lose the complete convenience of having a true zoom. The one thing I really wish Panasonic/Leica would do is have a constant f1.7 aperture on that lens; it would blow many of point and shoots right out of the water at that point. Though you would probably gain a bit of size doing so.

Damn some of those evening luts look incredible!! I have been dailing in my Lut sinds I received the camera and am looking for good Lut packs.

Can I download/buy some of yours used in this vid?? I only see Lightroom presets or are those Lut format?

Cheers!!

Today's cameras are so good, that an experienced photographer can take great images with either one. A poor photographer will take so so images. A "better" camera will not make you a better photographer; however many people think it will. We obsess over technology and seem to forget that experience and a creative eye will go a long way to make one a better photographer. If I was a salesman in a camera store, I'd suggest the L10 for the inexperienced person, because they'll love having an optical zoom lens. However for the experienced photographer, they'll know which camera best fits their needs.

The problem with the fixed lens on the x100vi is exactly why i chose the x pro 2 as my everyday carry, because i can just bring my favorite lenses on trips, while also having a small 27mm prime as a daily compact and lightweight carry :)

Smart review. Lumix hit their target, I think.

I am interesting in L10, because unique fast f1.7-f.28 zoom lens. No mft or apsc analog exists, especially if size is important. My camera today sony a6600 with 18-55f3.5 and 16-70f4. It's much bulkier than L10. So, for EDC, travel, lowlight L10 look attractive.
