The Flash Game Hiding a Disturbing Secret

You don't expect your average Flash game to be scary, at least not most of the time. While horror Flash games exist, they normally aren't shy about telling you what to expect.

But what would you expect out of a simple card game? Out of a short puzzle across a pixel map, where you can talk to your friends and neighbours and find out fun secrets like who has the best cards, where to go next, and that your village ran out of antibiotics months ago.

Gregory Weir created many masterpieces back in the heyday of the Flash Player, but no game, created by them nor by anyone else, quite captures the hidden existential horror of The Day.

Don't enter the woods.

Thank you for watching! I didn't expect so many people to be interested in cool and/or weird old Flash games. Many more to come!

Also, if you like videos like this, I have a Patreon where you can get some good bonuses in exchange for your support. Or at least I think they're good, I am biased though. It's only 17 billion dollars a month too, so a pretty good deal if you ask me.

"dont go into the woods or THE GUARDS WILL KILL YOU"
>so our objective is to find out why woods bad

@GutiskoAra 4 months ago

The developer notes mention that the adults are lying about the guards, but not about the woods

Oof. Minimalist storytelling in computer games sometimes delivers the biggest gut-punch.

I’m glad the twist wasn’t that you would be killed by one of the monster drones but rather that the whole world outside the camp is destroyed.

This is why I love flash games. I can just scroll through some random archive of them and find an interesting gem nobody has ever heard of.

Grandpa said the Troubles started when he was young, but that they only arrived at the camp when his son was a baby. So it’s a war that’s been going at least 70-80 years. They’re described as internees so they could even be POWs.

Funny thing is I played this as a kid and enjoyed it, NEVER left the camp. Just listened to dad and didn't even think about there being an exit

@StarHeaven07 3 months ago

Here's a horrifying thought; perhaps whatever combatants-that-once-were taking down this area's laser drone is the reason this particular camp didn't need to be targeted in the bombardments...

@wander7812 3 months ago

All of this also implies the soldiers didn't told the village that they can leave out of mercy. Just as you said... where would they go? that might be why they left the cameras on the automatic, because it would be of human nature to try and go out there, only to end up dying from whatever else is out there, if there is anything else left to begin with. The illusion of a unescapable cage is what's keeping these people safe.

really genuinely good job about misdirection here, the whole time in the woods i was tense about a freaky loose rampaging robot/mystery flesh creature jumpscare because of your narration. the desolation is such nicely revealed half-relief

@ElectricSquirrely 3 months ago

this was such a gem of a recommendation. Games like these are such sleeper hits bc they don't look fancy, but BOY do they have a mission to tell a story

Random note: The earth has been scorched by presumably Nuclear Weapons. Our main character apparently had a stomach ache earlier. The offhanded mention from the doctor to not “play too hard” because of the lack of antibiotics makes me think that this may be reoccurring.

Does the kid have radiation poisoning?

I was wondering at first if this was a game doing social commentary on a country oppressed by a militaristic dictatorship... cuz y'know, guards that will kill people if they stray too far, a card game with military ranks and civilians as the weakest ones, the cameras...

Wasn't expecting some potential lore on humanity being on the fringe due to an alien invasion, one that we only won at the cost of the entire planet.

I think it's also worth noting that the people in the internment camp have a noticeably darker skin tone that the soldiers on the cards too, maybe implying their families had perhaps emigrated from a foreign warring state in previous decades

it brings me immense pleasure how you manage to fit in the origami bird transitions even on your side channel 💖

@j4ck3t89 3 months ago

I like to interpret the "you have lost" message as a way to say humanity was defeated even when they took out a bunch of the laser drones and even exploited weaknesses using snipers and tanks, but the military were spread so thin against an possibly large attack that their only way to get "victory" was raining hellfire everywhere with missile silos as a desperate measure, Perhaps knowing that it was only a matter of time before the drones managed to break through the infantry line and begin to surround them from all sides.

@dasamont8274 4 months ago

This reminds me of my son. I told him to go into the woods, in an attempt to get him lost, but that lazy bugger never even leaves the house

@GP22855 3 months ago

Oh... Honestly from the thumbnail I expected one of the lazer drones to just kill the MC, but this is arguably a worse fate.

There are no guards, there's nothing outside the camp, or atleast only ruins and wrecks, and the only pieces of technology that could maybe contact someone still alive out there actively deny access to them.

Now, that is a blast from the past. I miss these old flash games like No One Has To Die and Exploit, where the devs polished the story in order to make up for the limited gameplay.
