Horse Fever - Interview with Gigi Proietti (2002)

In this 2002 interview, the unforgettable actor Gigi Proietti shares some anecdotes about the 1976 cult film "Horse Fever."

Horse Fever is a 1976 film directed by Steno.

Starring Gigi Proietti and Enrico Montesano, with Francesco De Rosa, Mario Carotenuto, Catherine Spaak, Gigi Ballista, Ennio Antonelli, and Adolfo Celi, the screenplay was written by Massimo Patrizi with the collaboration of Alfredo Giannetti, and was later reworked during pre-production. Considered, over the years, a cult film of Italian comedy, it launched the careers of the protagonists Proietti and Montesano, as well as being remembered for its unique rise to success over the years.

PLOT
The main characters are three friends with a passion for horse racing, forced to invent all sorts of tricks and scams to raise the money needed to fund their expensive and ultimately unsuccessful passion. Bad luck and their ancestral inexperience lead them to the point of inventing a huge and absurd scam to fix a race. Gambling fever, an obsession with betting, and luck intertwine in a somewhat shabby, cartoonish Rome, populated by comical characters who band together to avoid depression.

After achieving lukewarm box office returns upon its release, its numerous television appearances, particularly on local Roman networks, have relaunched it over time, making it a cult film for fans of Italian light comedy as well as for more or less regular patrons of betting shops and racetracks, also generating gags and comic scenes that have remained in the collective imagination.

A sequel, "Febbre da cavallo - La mandrakata," directed by Carlo Vanzina and with Proietti and Montesano reprising their roles, was filmed in 2002; in 2010, the film was re-screened at the 67th Venice Film Festival.
