No matter the level of player, some are going to say really smart things that make you think twice about the game and others will say some of the dumbest things imaginable

2021 Thembo IHOP was so much fun to be on, partially because of the media presence. Our teammates would brainstorm funny posts and videos, and various people would take turns working on them. We all learned about video editing and other social media stuff just because we were excited to share. It was fun when people started to recognize us!

would love a video about skill acquisition & how to develop drills as you mentioned!

unrelated but the comeback on the first match with two back to back power clams was nuts

The topic of how to advertise coaching ability is a smart one to think about. Results of teams they coach is certainly the most common way teachers advertise their clout. Testimonies are another big one, as are recommendations from other coaches and players.
I'd say coaches should prioritize those things. Testimony is especially very powerful when trying to establish yourself as an educator.

I'd say the best thing we can do though is start offering and asking for that kind of coach. People just need to get more aware of how that thing works.

I've seen a number of small resources sporadically offering a more centralized way to match coaches and teams. Not sure what the best way to spread this idea would be other than more people trying to make it part of their team.

Another thing that didn't get touched on in this video is how feedback is handled.
Teams right now often have to coach or plan with eachother. With the absence of a central authority to levee what is often difficult criticism, teams can often suffer from disagreements at best and infighting at worst, as egos are bruised and morale tanks.

Nearly every other team-based activity follows the rule that only the coach gets to critique people specifically to avoid those interpersonal fights. No matter how kind and mature the team is, it's impossible to avoid it when you are a peer. Having a dedicated person to drop the difficult truth bombs is invaluable for keeping the players together.

You make some very good points in your video. In a proper team environment, you delegate tasks. And not all tasks should involve being a "skilled player". I also like the idea of multiple coaches. Think in a baseball team, you would have a head manager role, but you would also have a coach that specializes in pitching, for example. Maybe for Splatoon, you could have a coach that focuses on the broader picture while also having more specialized coaches for individual roles/players.

I really enjoyed listening to your rambles and points about the non team roles. A friend had suggested I watch this video because they enjoyed my insight on their vods. Though I also felt like I was not qualified to be making hard criticism about others due to my own lack of results and therefore have my opinions be taken with a grain of salt. However, I do feel a bit more confident in my own judgement, I think having multiple perspectives on the game can really broaden your own understanding of the game regardless of skill level ❤

A coach is defined by their team and their analysis. If they can elevate a team and scout good players. They'll be respected. They dont need results besides the results of their coaching

Oo long discussion

Thank you for this video 🤩

10 mins in: lots of these ideas are cool i latched onto the coaching one a bit much (i still dont believe in that one but i dont think that was ever your main point)

also lol i forgot you were on NT

Hi! I just wanted to say that this video was sorta the thesis statement behind rebuilding my team (11 ft 8 Bridge). After attempting solo captaining for 3 years and then co-captaining my next team, I realized that having a team manager was vital to my success as a player. And the messages in this video stuck with me - I found a team manager and then held coach tryouts before even recruiting a single competing player to the roster. We went into those coach tryouts without demanding they be some arbitrary skill level, but rather just be knowledgeable and passionate about teaching.

Doing all this, I now have a foundation for a team that allows me to focus on improving as a player while still having some influence over the team's initial direction. After learning I could be a good leader or a good player but not both simultaneously, having non-player roles became vital and a solution to my prior stress in a leadership position. Thank you for making this video, it's had an outsized impact on how I view building a team.
