DAF vs Volvo vs Scania — which European truck is really the best?
For generations, truck drivers have argued over these three legendary badges. DAF represents Dutch practicality and efficiency. Volvo built its reputation around Swedish durability, safety and long-haul refinement. And Scania created one of the most passionate followings in trucking, helped enormously by the unmistakable sound and reputation of its legendary V8.
In this documentary, we take a deep dive into the history, engineering and rivalry behind DAF, Volvo and Scania, from their earliest trucks to the modern DAF XG+, Volvo FH and Scania S-Series.
We go back to DAF's beginnings in Eindhoven, Volvo's early Swedish workhorses and Scania's industrial roots stretching back to 1891. Along the way, we revisit legendary machines including the DAF 2600, DAF 2800, Volvo F88, Volvo F12, Scania 2-Series, Scania 3-Series and Scania 143 — trucks that helped create the European long-haul industry we recognise today.
But this isn't just about history.
We compare the philosophies behind their engines, transmissions, cabs, fuel efficiency, comfort, reliability and operating costs. From DAF's PACCAR MX engines and enormous XG+ cab, to Volvo's D13 and D16 straight-sixes and I-Shift transmission, to Scania's famous V8 and Opticruise drivetrain, each manufacturer approaches the same job very differently.
And that's where the rivalry gets interesting.
For a fleet manager, DAF's efficiency and payload-focused approach can make enormous sense. For demanding long-haul and heavy-duty work, Volvo's engineering and safety reputation are difficult to ignore. And for the owner-driver who wants something more emotional, few trucks inspire loyalty quite like a Scania V8. The script deliberately frames those priorities differently rather than pretending one badge wins everything.

To be honest reliability wise all manufacturers have their issues ,many of them are shared ,being a mechanic i know mant mechanics from other brands and we all have the same issues ,,Drivers are the badge snobs and go on about how great a brand is...A lot is down to the back up that the manufacturer supplies when the vehicle breaks down..In the UK DAF has the best service ,wether the mechanics on it are any good i don;t know ..To be honest getting a good mechanic nowdays is difficult ,many do not understand the systems and will tow a vehicle in .They then don't have to deal with the issue and do not give a diagnosis ,so that is them free from any mistakes ..
The Volvo FL10 was a brilliant vehicle ,its only real issue was it would shear exhaust manifold studs ,The Scania 3 Series again a brilliant truck,,though it would rip it's rear shocks off ,i would put down to drivers when dropping a trailer ,heater control cables ,not the end of the world ,throttle wouldn't always work when dropping the cab not a big issue...So back then the DAF was a winner ,,Volvos I shift ,the best AUTO box by far,,After the 3 series Scania lost its way with the 4 series ,In the UK there where claims for bad backs mainly because the smaller passenger side in LHD was the drivers side for us ,,
Drivers do love a Scania and will never admit they have faults ,but as said in the video there are many many things that decide what a company will buy ,and that includes what drivers think for some ,,Interior materials scania 1st volvo 2nd daf 3rd ..It does not make the DAF a bad enviroment
I've always really liked volvos over the years never found any of them to be a bad lorry
Everyone has their own favourite, I know the scania 143 is extremely popular but I hated them, defining noise in the cab horrible seats huge steering wheel with little movement, I just couldn't understand the popularity.
But that said since the 164 came along for me scania has always been the best, they kept getting better and better since then.
I am currently driving a next gen and to me it's the perfect truck, it has buttons because thankfully it's a pre screen dashboard model.
But no matter what make of truck it is screens and camera mirrors are the worst thing to happen to trucks so all makes are only getting worse now

The best gearbox incl crawler gears i shift form volvo
The most iconic sound from a 16L v8 770HP with ultra low rpm torque from Scania 3700nm torque
Its the ultimate wet dream in my opinion.
Even dough the 16L 780hp inline 6 engine from volvo is a masterpiece aswel. 3800nm torque
