Is Tesco really building its own lorry empire? A viral story claims Tesco secretly set up a new fleet company, ordered 2,500 new lorries in a day and plans to drop outside hauliers within three years. I went looking for the evidence. In this video I check each claim against the public record, follow Tesco's goods from depot to shelf, and show who actually moves them today.

In this video:

The four key claims in the viral story, checked one by one
Why the Wincanton share price claim can't be right: GXO has owned all of Wincanton since April 2024
What Tesco already runs itself: around 6,000 home delivery vans, 2,000+ of them electric, plus its own distribution staff and drivers
Where Tesco uses contractors and rail, including the DHL and Eddie Stobart contract round
The real trade-off of bringing haulage in-house at record diesel prices, worked through step by step
Why the rumour spreads, and the genuine pressure hauliers are under
Five signs that would show a retailer really was taking its haulage in-house
What it means for drivers, operators and shoppers

Figures described as "my working" or "illustrative" are my own calculations from the sources above, shown so you can check them. Where I say I couldn't find evidence for a claim, that reflects public reporting and records available at the time of recording. If new information appears, I'll cover it.

DISCLAIMER
This video is general, sector-wide analysis and commentary for educational purposes only. It is not financial, legal, employment or business advice, and it should not be relied on for decisions about your own business, contract, job or investments. Discussion of in-house versus contracted fleets is illustrative analysis, not a description of any company's plans. References to named companies are based on publicly reported information and are not allegations of wrongdoing. If you're making decisions about a haulage contract, a job move or business finances, speak to a qualified professional. Company positions, fuel prices and policy change quickly, so check current official sources, including Companies House and employers' own careers pages, before acting.

If this helped you sort the real Tesco story from the rumour, a like helps it reach the next person who saw that claim and wondered. Subscribe for the next video, where I'll go through Tesco's half-year results and what they say about transport and fuel costs.
