The year began with the devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Haiti, which caused catastrophic destruction and a massive loss of life. Just weeks later, the magnitude 8.8 megathrust earthquake struck Chile, one of the strongest ever recorded. Other major earthquakes affected places like China, Indonesia, Vanuatu, New Zealand, and Mexico, in several cases triggering tsunamis and widespread damage. The large number of earthquakes greater than magnitude 7, combined with their devastating effects and global reach, made 2010 one of the most memorable years for seismic activity during that decade.
