My company operates it's entire haulage fleet in-house and they are a big UK food manufacturer and retailer, they do this because they can control costs better and ensure the reliability of their operations they also pay a lot less for their o licence as it on a restriction ie they can only carry their own stock they also pay cheaper insurance and because they buy diesel direct and in bulk in advance save their as well, I don't think Tesco will be the last big retailer to do this many more will follow

There is no "Shortage of HGV Qualified Drivers" in the UK, there is however a Shortage of HGV Qualified Drivers "Willing to work in the industry anymore" due to pay, conditions, and other associated reasons affecting work and home life. (Data from DVLA's own records), and at least 2 3rds of those who have left the industry in the last 5 years still have valid HGV entitlements and active Tacho and CPC cards.

I smell a need for control from spade to plate. This cannot be solely driven by money, because it sounds like they’re offering more in a sector where margins are slim. There’s another motive. All I see in the world at the moment is deepening control of everything by behemoths.

The prices in Tesco aren’t just a rip off. They’re extortionate. I avoid the place like the plague and as a truck driver of over 30 years experience, I’m glad I do having seen this video. I’m only 5 or so years from retirement and I’m glad. The race to the bottom is speeding up.

My local farm (North East and West Cheshire) does a seasonal veg box to feed a small family for a week at a cost of £16.45 grown locally and delivered to your door. This week it includes:

Potatoes, Carrots, Uchiki Kuri Squash, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cavolo Nero, Fennel and Sweet Potatoes

You can, for £1, customise that box swapping out items for any combination of:

Spinach, Peppers, Spaghetti Squash, Mushrooms, Beetroot, Onions, Golden Beetroot, Celery, Red Onions, Red Cabbage, Kale, Harlequin Squash, Potatoes, Carrots, Courgettes, Mixed Leaf Salad

There are superb operations like this across the country if you would like to support farmers and no, I don't have skin in this game other than a son who worked there for a couple of years before travelling. The taste is better, the miles and chemicals are lower and the money is supporting local farmers.

Interesting listening. I am not in the industry but used to have two small international hauliers as clients.
It is a very hard industry to make profit in.
One breakdown abroad and months of profit on that unit will be gone.

I’ve been in Lorrie’s since I was 6 and run my own 2 wagons. I’ve been saying for years it’s about time everyone started running their own wagons to move their own products! It cuts out price wars and a race to the bottom with rates.
The same with maintenance a lot of companies are again starting to bring maintenance back in-house I do my own and apart from a blown clutch I’ve never had to be recovered I’ve changed a turbo on Oxford services. I used to look after 19 motors and it’s far better to do inspections yourself

I'm kinda shocked you didn't give the super hub Goole a mention given it's one of the largest Tesco hubs in the UK. and for some years now Tesco admittedly used more 3rd party hauliers choosing to slowly phase out stobart from their day to day oprations. I was in and out almost daily at Goole and there's a definite trend with the increase in Tesco owned units and you hardly see a Stobart truck in there any more. I have 30 years in trucking before retiring, 12 more than the creator of this channel and what he's reporting isn't exactly new. this has been Tesco's plan for some time. I remember when i first drove for Tesco with Wincanton until Stobart took over, Tesco was making plans to cut out 3rd party hauliers. I'm just surprised this is being discussed as a relatively new concept when it's already been in the works for some time.

I used to do return loads to Tesco's Widnes for Fowler Welch Spalding and Teynham. Used to run multi drops from are depo in Oswestry then when i was empty i'd drop the Trailer at Fowler Welch. Then i'd go collect my trailer next day which 90% hadn't moved and was still empty. Then when they had pulled their finger out and loaded it i'd leave late and get it to Tesco's Widnes for a nice long wait in their waiting room. I had a Pentons lorry with Fowler Welch paper work and a Tesco's load.

I worked for a packaging supplier to Tesco in the 80s and 90s. They have always treated suppliers like this.

Tesco was always ruthless (Mr Cohen was a barrow boy originally after all) see how they used to treat suppliers and hold off paying invoices, that's got better now but only because they had to.
