The Top 10 Lies I Told As A Pastor
For years, I stood on the pulpit, preaching what I thought was the truth. I believed I was guiding people closer to God. But the reality? I was unknowingly spreading falsehoods, fear, and manipulation—not because I was deceptive, but because I was deceived.

In this video, I reveal the Top 10 Lies I Told as a Pastor—the very doctrines that keep people trapped in Christianity without questioning it. These are the same lies your pastor tells you every Sunday, and chances are, he doesn’t even realize it.

0:00 - Introduction
1:41 - 10 God has a plan for your life
2:46 - 9 The Bible is the word of god
3:53 - 8 Jesus loves you unconditionally
4:24 - 7 Christianity is not a religion
5:13 - 6 Prayer Works
5:56 - 5 God answers in his own time
6:30 - 4 You can't be good without god
7:12 - 3 Doubt is a test of your faith
7:43 - 2 Hell is a choice
8:33 - 1 You have to have faith
8:59 - Conclusion

📖 If you’ve ever had doubts about your faith, this video is for you. If you’ve been told to “just have faith” whenever you asked hard questions, this video is for you. If you’ve ever been taught to fear hell, obey blindly, and accept suffering as ‘God’s plan’, this video is for you.

I was a pastor. I was deep in it. But I got out. And if you're watching this, you’re already on the path to freeing yourself from religious indoctrination.

Hey! How do you feel your pastor may have lied to you? Think they did it on purpose?😉

Prayed every night for my 8 and 5 year old daughters to be safe and then my 5 year old died suddenly from thyroid storm and had Christian’s tell me my faith wasn’t strong enough is why my daughter died.I left religion and Christianity after that and never looked back

Walking away was the most liberating feeling in my life.

I think "nothing works like prayer" is pretty accurate. Doing nothing works exactly the same as saying a prayer. It's just faster.

As an ex-christian, nothing does my heart better than to hear an ex-preacher tell others that it's all a big fat lie.

When people tell me “God works in mysterious ways.” I always answer “So do humans.”

"Faith is the last line of defense when religion runs out of excuses." Well said, we shouldn't see blind obedience in spite of evidence as a virtue.

The quote I heard most of the time as a gullible Christian was, "He may not come when you want him to, but he's always right on time." It was never true!

“Love me or I’ll torture you” really hit home. Atrocious and psychotic in any context.

The first brick removed from my wall of faith was prompted by "if you need religion to be a good person, you're probably terrible."

Faith, the magic word that keeps you never having to think for yourself.

The deeper a person goes, studying the historical origins and evolution of the Christian faith, the less believable it becomes.

It's amazing when the veil falls and you take off the chains of religion. You feel lighter and you can breathe better and smile more.

Christians: " God gave us free will."
Also Christians: " God has a plan for you."
Also Christians: " Nothing happens unless God planned it."
Me: " So God does not allow free will."

I appreciate what you said at the end there. I taught Sunday School for most of my life. When I deconverted I was mad, but didn't have anyone to be mad at because I knew they truly believed everything they told me, just like I believed the crap I told my students. I still feel guilty about it sometimes

As a Christian I was taught how to lie. Not to others but to myself. Once you learn how to lie to yourself, lying to others comes easy.

I was watching another channel on relationships and the content creator said something really, really interesting. Can't remember what channel it was at the moment, but it really doesn't matter. He was talking about "hope" versus "expectation" in the context of relationships, and he said this about "hope": Hope is passive. It doesn't require any action. Hope is a waiting game. Expectation, on the other hand, requires action. It sets goals and deadlines. It is proactive. There is a big difference between staying in an undefined relationship hoping that it will get better over time versus establishing expectations for this relationship and what will happen if they are not met.

IMMEDIATELY a light bulb went off in my mind and I thought about how many times I've heard hope used in a Christian context. I'd never before heard hope described in such a fashion. So much of what we call prayer and faith is simply good old-fashioned passive hope. It doesn't change anything. Hope makes it possible to make excuses for God's failure and shift the blame onto ourselves. Because the minute we start talking about expectations in the context of Biblical promises, when we say we expect Jesus to keep his word when he says if two or three ask in his name it shall be done, no exceptions, no qualifications, no fine print, and what we ask for does not happen, now we have a problem. We either have to come up with excuses or call Jesus a liar.

Subscribed! As a black woman who is agnostic atheist (agnostic to the universe and beyond, and atheist to the religious beliefs of the world/earth), I genuinely believe that we don't have adequate representation of black people talking about deconstructing religion, especially Christianity. I really hope you and @mindshift can get together soon. You sound so calm, factual, and genuine in explaining the conflicts and contradictions of religion. Having your perspective as a former pastor is wonderful!
