When the remaining Central High Nine were being honored in LR, Paul came to honor them and told them that they were in his mind while writing this song. In British slang, Bird means girl, so he was singing about Black girls , the Nine in particular, and for them to hold on and not give up their hope for a better future.

Yeah, not a metronome. That is Paul's foot tapping (it was miked up).

As far as I remember,   this song was a reaction to the civil unrest for black Americans rights to vote and be treated equal under the law. I was only 10, but I remember watching and talking about it with my dad. Thanks BP

I had a volatile home life as a teen, and I used to sing this to myself when I felt broken. It was so powerful. I knew it was about the civil rights movement, but for me it was personal, just gave me hope.

In the UK  especially Liverpool  the call women  birds
 He was singing about oppression
The Beatles refused to play any segregated shows!

Blackbird was inspired by the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's.

"You were only waiting for this moment to arise"

For all you guitar players out there, you know this song (played correctly) ain't easy. Sounds easy. But it isn't.

The Beatles had toured the United States three times from 1964 to 1966. They saw first-hand and upfront the civil rights struggle that was tearing apart American society. British musicians who came overseas were a bit naive about race relations in the States. So, yes, this is a coded protest song. Those who got it, got it. Others saw it as a simple acoustic folk song.

That "metronome" is Paul tapping his foot in time (mic'd up in the studio)

"Blackbird" is about finding the courage to rise above suffering and injustice, and believing that even after darkness, you can learn to fly

Macca has commented that the Little Rock Nine of Central High School during the civil rights movement was a main inspiration for the song. I believe he did a concert in Little Rock not too long ago and sang it to some of them.

Paul is just tapping his foot like a metronome

McCartney explained that the imagery of a bird learning to fly despite "broken wings" represents resilience and the potential to overcome oppression. The moment “to arise” represents a chance to rise up for freedom from oppression. The song was particularly inspired by the Little Rock Nine, a group of Black students who faced intense hostility while integrating Central High School in Arkansas in 1957. The song emphasizes the idea of seizing a moment of change, reflecting the broader fight for civil rights and social justice. (The Beatles also refused to perform for segregated audiences in the USA, notably cancelling a concert in Jacksonville, Florida, when they learned the audience would be racially segregated).

The singing bird is an actual European Blackbird. A type of thrush. However you
were absolutely right that it's a symbol for Black women during the 60s civil rights
movement. Very good.

The first time The Beatles toured the U.S. in 1964, and went south, the promoter told them they would have to perform in front of a segregated audience. The Beatles would have none of that and said they wouldn’t perform unless everyone sat together. The promoter gave in and everyone sat together. The Beatles from then on put it in their concert contracts that they wouldn’t perform in front of segregated audiences.

"Bird" is British slang for a young woman, which is how Paul meant it in the song.
"Twist and Shout" was first recorded by The Top Notes in '61 and made a hit by the Isley Brothers in '62. Beatles covered it in '63.

In England, a Bird, is slang for a young woman. The "metronome" is actually Paul tapping both of his feet in time. There is video of him doing it. In 1964, The Beatles were scheduled to perform in Jacksonville Florida. When they found out the audience would be segregated, they refused to play unless the audience was integrated. Jacksonville relented and integrated the audience. From that time on, The Beatles had a rider in all of their contracts refusing to perform if the audience was segregated.

1968 was a difficult year.
MLK was killed
Bobby Kennedy was killed.
Civil Rights seemed to be smothered by fierce violent oppression.
This song is an oasis in a desert wasteland.
I was 3 years old then.
The youngest of 8 black children.
This double album was my eldest sister's Christmas present in '68.
The year it was recorded and released.
This album is also my first memory.
✌️♥️🍏

Paul McCartney wrote "Blackbird" expressly as a civil rights protest song and to send a message of support to people of color who were suffering from racism in America.  It was written specifically about a woman McCartney saw being mistreated.  "Bird" was '60s slang for a girl.  If you want to hear another stripped down Beatles song, check out "Yesterday."  One of their most iconic songs; it's been covered by more artists than any other song of the rock era.  A gigantic #1 hit from 1965 that let the world know the Beatles were more than just a rock 'n roll band.

When they played Jacksonville in September 1964 the venue had been scheduled to be segregated but the Beatles refused to perform unless that was changed. The venue gave in and The Beatles had a clause added to their contract to stop it from happening again.
