A strange day, one of those when your instinct tells you something feels off, I walk into a hostel in Johannesburg escorted, a place that many in the area point to as a refuge for cr1m1nals.
Between tense hallways and dark rooms, I end up in front of a “boss” who speaks without filters, together with the women who work with him. A bit later, a group of Nigerians who control part of the neighborhood lets me enter their world for a few minutes.
