Building in the Philippines can come with surprises, especially when you're remodeling a home and construction work is about to be buried, covered or permanently hidden. In this Philippines construction update from our home in Bohol, a damaged drain pipe taught us a valuable lesson: TRUST… BUT VERIFY!

During the latest construction around our home, workers accidentally damaged a PVC drain pipe. Accidents happen during construction, so that wasn't the real problem.

We showed the damaged pipe to our contractor and understood that it would be repaired.

A few days later, while our contractor was out of town, we discovered that the workers had buried the pipe.

So we asked the foreman a very simple question:

Was the pipe repaired?

He told us, "yes."

But something didn't feel right.

We asked them to dig it back up so we could see the repair ourselves.

What we discovered underneath the dirt completely changed the situation.

In this episode of Island Expats, you'll see what happened from beginning to end—including the original damage, why we questioned the repair, what we found after digging the pipe back up, the attempted quick fix, and what happened when our contractor returned.

But this video isn't really about one broken drain pipe.

It's about something we've learned while building and remodeling a home in the Philippines:

If important construction work is about to disappear behind a wall, underneath concrete or underground—inspect it BEFORE it's covered.

Take pictures. Ask questions. Document the work. And if something doesn't seem right, speak up.

This isn't about criticizing Filipino workers or contractors. Construction mistakes happen everywhere. Our contractor ultimately agreed that the damaged section needed to be corrected properly and took responsibility for getting the situation resolved.

For foreigners considering building a house in the Philippines, remodeling in the Philippines, buying property in the Philippines, retiring in the Philippines or living in the Philippines, we hope sharing our real experiences helps you know what to watch for when it's your turn.

We're continuing to document the entire experience of owning and improving our home here in Bohol—the good, the unexpected, the mistakes and the lessons we're learning along the way.
