If the United Kingdom were to disintegrate tomorrow: Scotland and Wales to become independent, Northern Ireland to reunify with Ireland, would England automatically inherit the United Kingdom? Who would own the UK's national debt, overseas assets, nuclear weapons, its permanent seat on the UN Security Council, and even the identity of "Union Jack" and "British"? Looking at the cases of the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia, the answer is not as simple as "England is the largest, therefore everything belongs to England."
Even more difficult to divide are the national assets that cannot be quantified. The Royal Family, the BBC, the Commonwealth, top universities, James Bond, Shakespeare, and even the global brands left by the British Empire, are all comprised of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Furthermore, the UK's Trident nuclear weapons base is located in Scotland; if Scotland were to become independent and demand the removal of its nuclear weapons, whether England could find the space and resources to rebuild the entire system could directly determine whether it would still be a nuclear-armed state.
But independence is no free lunch: Scotland's North Sea oil fields are maturing; Wales' public spending exceeds local taxes; and the reunification of Northern and Southern Ireland involves healthcare systems, identity, and security risks. Even if they wish to rejoin the EU, they may not be immediately accepted. When the US, EU, China, and Russia recalculate their interests, will the former British Empire be reduced to a "Little England" surrounded by the EU and stripped of its special relationship?
