What a line up and I think Japanese whisky would soon enter the league (deservedly). A very special Yamasaki bottle would be the best candidate.

Excellent video Mark. Congratulations and thank you for distilling (sorry) that information. Very interesting indeed. I agree with you about the date things started to get hot 2017/18. Things had been drifting in that direction in 2015/16 but that was within the whisky drinking community. Celebrity endorsed rubbish like Haig Club hit the market around 2016 in order to sell the image of whisky and a lot of start up investment too, so things were on the way. I picked up a few things at that time because I new they would run away from me in the near future. Even little old Hibiki 12 sells for over £500 these days. I wince when I see some of the Springbanks I used to enjoy with total impunity rocking out for eye watering sums considering the juice in the bottle.

This list is very interesting on many levels. It's very sherry dominated. (The Bowmore is extremely suspicious.) In terms of playboy investment I would say the wheels fell of, or rather the brakes came on, just when the Covid pandemic hit us. I agree with you that there's unlikely to be a challenger any time soon to that number 1. Some might think Japanese but I don't think so. They can't compete with age. If I had the money I would blow out on some interesting historical bottle but it might taste like rubbish. That's the thing with all of these. It's investment, I get it, but I would love to see one of the owners of these bottles have the balls to open that bottle and drink the stuff. I'd love to know what 1926 Macallan tastes like.

Whisky is a status symbol to those that aren't whisky drinkers, but quite a few of those too - "I got a case of Local Barely", etc. I love the history and enjoy the aesthetics of a full bottle and lovely label. I find it very hard to open some of my collection. Great wine collectors simply look at their collection for enjoyment and I understand that. The place where they bought it, the ageing process, the label, the memories and all the rest. It can be painful to empty such a receptacle. An empty bottle is not the same. Why do we do it though? I've said this before but we could fill a bottle with coloured water (who knows what was in that Bowmore) and we would still have all the pleasure. It's the same for art buyers that enjoy a fake. The pleasure is perfectly fine until the truth is revealed.

Final thing and sorry for the long post (but a very interesting video): I think the ultra top-end market has peaked but there's a lot of catch up further down the line. I think many folk have reached the peak and what is left is for the speculators but who are they going to sell to? There's still a lot of movement right now but I'm thinking that regular whisky buyers are fed up and changing their purchasing habits. WT

well thats cleared that up ,, no - i am joking - i have heard of the 1.2 million bottle but not the 1.45 . ,,, so there is always something to learn , even though i am in a whisky circle [ no drunken spin intended ] if you want to make us another video it could be on what you think these would fetch now and what may take over , or like you say the price drop ;;;

Nothing will break that for quite sometime… but what I do see happening is a HUGE spike in price in the American whiskeys like the pappy van winkles and michters / btac and old stitzel Weller bottlings soon

You mention charity auctions can be tax deductible, I think this is false.  As you're receiving an item from your donation, it can't be written off as a normal cash donation could be.  If I'm wrong would love to be corrected.
