Magadan is a port city in northeastern Russia, located on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk (in Nagaev and Gertner Bays). It is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the Magadan Region. The settlement was founded in 1929 to provide logistical support for precious metal mining in the Kolyma region. City status was granted in 1939. From the 1930s to the 1950s, the city served as the administrative center of the state-owned Dalstroy trust and the main transit point for prisoners in the Sevvostlag forced labor camp system.

The city's modern economy is based on administrative support for the region's gold mining industry, the fishing industry, maritime shipping, and mechanical engineering (manufacturing and repair of mining equipment). The climate is subarctic, characterized by long, windy winters and short, cool summers with frequent fog.
