This was apparently 15,000 - 17,000 total extras, for comparison the original battle of Waterloo had roughly 193,000 total combatants, the battle of Leipzig had possibly 500,000+ men!

One of the greatest movies ever

The scene at the beginning is when Napoleon received word that Marshal Marmont had surrendered Paris. That’s what happened.

I became fascinated with Napoleon when I was stationed in Mons, Belgium. I visited the nearby Waterloo battlefield many times and learned so much there. The weather was so wet and muddy and the air was filled with so much smoke from the black powder rifles and cannon that no one knew who the enemy was during hand-to-hand combat. Even today, farmers are still unearthing human bones from the battlefields. Behind Napoleon's field quarters in Waterloo, there is a chimney monument with an iron grate where human bones are stacked inside. Concerning Wellington, Napoleon dreaded him because he was becoming more and more familiar with his war tactics - and increasingly harder to fool.

So yes the Duchess of Richmonds ball did take place. Although it was in what was essentially a large barn that had been done up for the occasion rather than a hall. Wellington used it as an opportunity to gather all his senior officers in one place, and he didn’t want to end the ball immediately as he wished to portray an image of calmness, instead of causing a panic in Brussels. Interestingly many officers who attended the ball didn’t have time to change as they were soon heading to the crossroads at Quatre Bras. This amusingly meant that during Quatre Bras and Waterloo they were wearing their dress uniforms (that typically they’d only wear on parade in Britain, formal occasions etc) wearing their gold/silver lace and breeches instead of their slightly toned down campaign uniforms with trousers

39:53, Napoleon is referring to his legitimate son, Napoleon Bonaparte II with Princess Marie Louise of Austria, who unfortunately lived for 21 years as a captive prince of Austria and wasn't allowed to do any sort of politics or military nor allowed to return to France or go to Italy, nor allowed to inherit any duchies and he became a bargaining chip between Austria and France.
Also Josephine passed away while Napoleon was in exile on island of Elba

Poor old Ney (the bravest of the brave). The Bourbon government wouldn't forget his "treachery" and after Waterloo, they shot him

2:22:27 Orson Welles portrayed King Louis... Napoleon was portrayed by Rod Steiger. Orson was only featured so prominently in the cast despite being in the movie for a few minutes because at the time he was one of the largest names in Hollywood.

It's so cool; the practical effects, even just seeing the sun glisten off the bayonets, are something you would never see in a modern film with CGI.

Saw this in the theater when it came out. Seeing the Guard attack on the big screen was fantastic.

The movie does take a few historical liberties, particularly towards the end. Napoleon was fully aware of Blucher's arrival before he ordered the Middle (not Old) Guard to advance, and Young Guard and other units had been engaged against the leading Prussians on the right flank for several hours. An army that size doesn't just appear.

The Old Guard formed squares to cover the French army's retreat and although badly shot up, they were not all slaughtered and actually managed to withdraw in good order.

I remember reading a book in the 10th grade back in 1977 on this battle,the farm house seemed pivotal.This was a really big
book,however it consumed me,couldn’t put it down.Around the same time was on a trip with my dad (who was in the military)and at the Navy Lodge one night this movie came on, I had never seen a war movie with such scope.The word iconic is so overused today but the battle scenes in this movie are truly iconic,no computer wizardry here,real people!The scenes with the British squares is truly mind boggling!Viva la France;long live England!

"Waterloo" is not just one of the greatest war films ever made, it's one of the greatest films ever made in general imo! The breathtakingly shot battle, the amazing score, and two of the best performances of all time by Plummer and even more so Steiger. Though Rod was excellent in "In The Heat of The Night," - which he won an Oscar for, imo this is actually his best performance. Then on top of all those other reasons, being someone who got my degrees in history and now teach military history - I can attest to the fact that this movie is also extremely historically accurate, (especially when compared to most historical war films). Which is much appreciated see as how most historical epics are chalked full of revisionist history and/or propaganda. It didn't absolutely butcher who Napoleon was by portraying him as a Hitler-esque, tyrannical, petulant man-child - the way he was in that absolute abomination Ridley Scott just made a couple years back.

1:14:06 the red and white flag is the polish flag, as the cavalry was napoleon's polish lancers

@jamie8032 10 months ago (edited)

at Waterloo, Napoleon wanted to start the battle immediately and defeat Wellington before the Prussians arrived - then deal with the Prussians once Wellington was knocked out - divide and conquer, a tactic which napoleon employed in many battles prior. the heavy rainfall and mud hindered his offensive capability. Time was on Wellington's side - hunker down, absorb the french onslaught and wait for reinforcements, while with Napoleon he had to attack. also another bit of trivia, the real Duke of Wellington was not English, he was Irish. born in Ireland, to an Irish Protestant land-owning family.

1:36:05 Picton's baggage was lost. He lost his uniform before the battle.

46:37 thats actually true Wellington almost hated the common soldier under his command.

@patrykzielinski3514 7 months ago

One important detail that many miss in this film is how viewers see the French army marching always to the left, while the British and Prussian armies march to the right. This was intentionally done to make it easier to keep track of which army is on screen.

If you look closely, you can see that the scenes featuring the Prussian army are mirrored to maintain this principle. Each Prussian cavalryman holds a saber in his left hand.

In Fact , Wellington had led a field Wargame at Waterloo . He knew the terrain and lines of sight. One of the hardest parts of command is NOT reacting to the enemy feints. The nerve required to stick to a defensive strategy is incredible.
Read Chandlers “ Campaigns of Napoleon “.
