Apparently I have learned absolutely NOTHING from my previous sight-unseen auction trailer purchases… because I bought ANOTHER one. 😂
This time it’s a lowboy trailer sitting at an auction yard in Southern California, and just like every good financial decision, I bought it without actually going down there to look at it first. So it was time to point the truck south and find out exactly what kind of problem I had purchased this time.
At least I had an excuse to make the trip useful.
My longtime friend Kelvin with Auto Care Towing in Watsonville, California had bought some parts at an auction near me, so I loaded them onto the detachable flatbed on my Palfinger knuckle boom crane truck and hauled them south with me. Once I got to Watsonville, I used the Palfinger crane to unload everything, caught up with an old friend for a bit, and then continued south toward the auction yard to meet my newest questionable purchase.
When I finally got there, the lowboy actually looked… surprisingly decent.
Which should have been my first warning.
I checked the trailer over, detached the custom flatbed from the truck, and used the knuckle boom crane to load it onto the lowboy for the trip home. Everything was going suspiciously well right up until I managed to screw up the valve sequence on my hydraulic system.
The result?
About 12,000 PSI sent directly to a hydraulic hose that absolutely did NOT want 12,000 PSI.
The hose exploded, and in approximately half a second I managed to coat my Palfinger crane truck, myself, and what felt like half the auction yard in hydraulic oil.
Perfect.
Because nothing says “please don’t inspect me” quite like pulling into a California scale with a commercial truck that looks like the Exxon Valdez just ran aground on it.
Somehow I still managed to get everything together, hook onto my new sight-unseen auction lowboy trailer, and start heading north. At that point the mission became pretty simple: get out of Southern California, avoid creating any additional disasters, hopefully avoid an inspection with my freshly oil-coated truck, and make it home so I could finally take a closer look at what I actually bought.
So… did I finally score a GOOD auction trailer?
Or did I just drag another expensive project hundreds of miles home?
There’s only one way to find out.

Yea…. I was a doofus on that other post on the short because I did not realize this was the pump for your knuckle boom. I don’t think there is a hydraulic line made that could handle that kind of pressure. But making mistakes like this is how you learn. Kinda like me setting the controls on an overhead crane ablaze because I was in a hurry unloading a truck and operating the unit faster than it was designed. Watching you speed through to set the bed on the trailer brought back some good memories of lessons learned in my prior life.
Keep up the good work Casey and keep the videos coming. This channel brings back nice memories of a tough job running a rigging company.
