In this video, I list nine mind-blowing, audiophile quality classic albums of the 1970's. The first couple CDs start in the year 1970 and the last one ends in 1979. All nine CDs have at least audiophile quality sound with several having top notch demonstration quality sound. Some of these CDs were either mastered or remastered by Bob Ludwig or Bernie Grundman. Nearly all the CDs listed are iconic albums known and loved by most music lovers.

An absolutely iconic 1971 release was Who's Next by, of course, The Who. Not only musically rich but also exceptional sonically, like its 1969 older brother, Tommy. I first heard Baba O'Reilly on a pair of Altec A7 Voice of the Theater speakers, and wow!

Great video! Just discovered your channel and subscribed. So happy to find an audiophile leaning music channel that focuses on CD’s.

Thanks, great video. I wasn't aware about some bands on the list. I like your taste in music and audio.

Great selection! I have several CDs with the SBM technology, I do agree that most of the time they offer superior sound quality, but most importantly it is the mastering process that provides the superior sound. Thanks for the great videos! Greetings from France!!

Funny you should mention Ambrosia, and their first album. Way back when I was at uni in Boston late 70's, a friend was really into hi-fi. He managed to put together a quadrophonic system and this bought this album in a quad version. He invited a few of us over for a listen and I can remember (barely) being blown away listening to it. Thanks for mentioning this album, and the first track Nice, Nice, very Nice is a great song!

The 70s brought us the Aphex Aural Exciter, which was used on Rumors, as well as Linda Ronstadt and Joan Armatrading albums during that time. I still believe the best sounding recordings of all time were brought to us in the 70s.

I really enjoyed the albums you highlighted and own all of them except for Ambrosia and Tarney-Spencer, though I do have Ambrosia on a greatest‑hits compilation. Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus is a particular favorite — I have the MoFi pressing, and it sounds outstanding. It’s firmly in my top 25 albums of all time. Every one of these titles deserves a place in any well‑rounded classic rock collection. Jeff Beck's "Wired" sounds great in my opinion and Paul Simon has some really great audiophile albums.
What are some of your favorite CDs & LPs of the 1970's? Which ones have the best sound and music combined? Please share those with us.

Your videos are among the most looked forward to, on Youtube, for myself and I bet your other fans Rob. Keep em coming! Aja by Steely Dan, as you say, could have the best production values of all rock albums. I do find one track skippable; Deacon Blues. I don't quite dislike the track, but find it a little slow going and not as intriguing musically as the rest of the tracks. Lyrically interesting though.Walter Becker was the audiophile between himself and Fagan. He became an audiophile from listening to Magnepan speakers somewhere; which he then bought. I have a feeling he was the one more instrumental in Steely Dan's lps having great sound.
Gold Dust Woman from Rumours sounded great on DCM Time Window speakers way back then. A high end audio store used to often use it as a demo. They said we have better speakers than DCM (which were good), but nothing brings out the song's feeling like the Time Windows. Glad you skipped Dark Side Of The Moon (unless I missed it). Too obvious a choice. Wish You Were Here however would've made my list. The British lp pressing almost sounded acoustical, with much less electronic signature in the sound than the US lp. Some cds sound too electronicy, but after improving my audio system, that electronicy character dissipates. Two big time examples of that on my system are the cds Who Are You-The Who and Sly And The Family Stone Greatest Hits. Those 2 cds were almost unlistenable on my gear a year ago.
I must have doubled my sound quality with mods, tweaks and different hookip since then. They have twice the sound quality now, after being very disappointing at first. Another cd that would be on my list now, that wouldn't have made it before due to its "former pre mod) electronicy sound quality is the self titled album by the group Asia. Heat Of The Moment is not the only good track; all of them are.
This might be 70s or 80s.
Mobile fidelity started releasing Original Master Recording lps around 1978. All of their early all analog musical realeases except for The Mystic Moods Orchestra, King Crimson and Abbey Road were 1970s music in my memory. Then they started releasing some 1980s and on stuff. Some other audiophile labels witnessing their success, started releasing enhanced sound quality lps too; including Super Disk (not to be confused with Nautilus Su:per Disc), which came out with the Blood Sweat & Tears abum with David Clayton Thomas as vocalist.
Rob, I had to change my username, due to some harrassers on another channel. I think you know who I am, just by my writing. The last word in my former username was the word "up". You mentioned that you like when I leave cd recommendations. Which of my cd recommendations in the past have you listened to and liked the best?....Here's a few more fairly obscure ones, which meet the criteria of great muic and sound quality.
Night Passage-Weather Report
After Hours-George Duke.

Thanks for sharing, Rob. I hadn't thought about Tarney/Spencer for quite a while. I had "Run For Your Life" and their 2nd album "Three's Company" on vinyl back in the late 1970s. I was able to locate "Run" on CD but not so far for "Three's Company."

Hello Rob. I appreciate very much your indications, most of then I really like. I noticed some of your recommendations are remasters, and I have heard (and read) that remasters maybe not so good in sound quality, mainly because of the Loudness War, you know, when engineers compress and expand the tracks to sound louder, in order to make people think that louder is better.
As an example, this Dire Straits album that you mention, a 1996 Sony SBM remaster by Bob Ludwig. I do not have this one, but have two other albuns from the band, On Every Street , and the classic Brothers in Arms, both of them the same SBM remastered CDs by Bob Ludwig, and also the "original" copies, respectively from 1991 (Germany) and 1985 (USA). In comparison, the originals are definitely lower in volume, but present a wider dynamic range, with more nuances and details. That was one of the goals of CD when it was launched, to demonstrate its full potential and dynamics of music. The loudness war kind of "leveled" everything.
Have you ever had the chance to hear and compare some of the remasters that you mention, with the original releases?
I would appreciate your thoughts. (excuse me for being too long). Regards ! Marcelo

So I happened to notice the Tarney Spencer in your thumbnail while scrolling and stopped immediately to see if my eyes were playing tricks or not. So I watched your video and agree on all of these and have them all on vinyl and CD. Not the Legacy editions though, so great info. The CD i do not have is Tarney Spencer and you did not mention that is, or was, rare and never issued on CD for 20 or 30 years, and then the first import edition out was very high priced. I hadn't searched for it for a few years but thanks to you I just looked and ordered one for 20 bucks. It is still in short supply and the 2018 release comes from Sweden. It's never been released domestically.
All your picks are great and I will add a couple. Either Tales Of Mystery and Imagination or I Robot by The Alan Parsons Project. 😊

Hi Rob... Thanks for a cool video featuring some amazing music releases. I used to work at Radio Shack in the 80s and I completely 'get' your meaning of Demonstration Quality. I used to use "Fragile" and "Abraxas" as demonstration records when demonstrating stereos. It was 1982, before CDs, but the CD releases were every bit as exciting as the vinyl I was using. I am going to take your suggestions for the Spirit and Tarney Spencer CDs. I have heard some of the "Dr. Sardonicus" album, but never sat down to give it a real listen. The Tarney Spencer hit, "No Time To Lose," was a favorite that I'd first heard on MTV in the early 80s. I like the criteria you used to select these albums.
Some other 70s albums I'd like to recommend for sonic and musical consideration:
- "Chicago V" by Chicago
- "How Dare You" by 10cc
- "All 'n All" by Earth, Wind & Fire
- "The Stranger" by Billy Joel
- "Leftoverture" by Kansas.
Rock on!

Tarney/Spencer--nice. I picked up the Run for Your Life LP a few years ago cheap.
