no tipping culture in Vietnam" I was thinking where did they get that from?
I only can think of the restaurants and dinners, here's the thing most restaurants and dinners in Vietnam are family owned, so you don't pay the owners and then tip them....I think this is the reason why most tourists observed and assumed "no tipping culture"...In the US you don't tip in McDonald or KFC, same as in Vietnam.
How do you tip in Vietnam? These are the situations that you should tip:
- Big restaurants, you see many waiters and waitresses and you can tell they're not related to the owner but are outside employees.
- Hotels, midsize to big hotels, even small hotels, likely the people who helped you are outside employees or even family members
- Taxi, Grabs, Ubers, food deliveries these guys make very little to keep their companies afloat with cheap rides, they make money based on the quantities of rides , each day they're outside in the sun and rain
- Barber, haircut,
-Food sellers, sometimes the food is so cheap and you feel they're outside in the sun all day, and make no sell, for some Vietnamese they say "keep the change" as a way to help out
Tip for you 😊 Learn a few Vietnamese words and try to interact with the locals. If necessary, use Google translation. Another tip Don't be afraid to aproach them. They are shy from the beginning. Once they trust you they will open their hearts and souls for you.
