When I'm teaching, I never just give the right answer, I walk the student through the thinking, including the wrong turns or possible mistakes, it's the best way to engage the student's brain.

I think that's why people (myself included) like the random bits you leave in, it's not just "I did this", it becomes "why did I do this?"

As matter of fact is any kind of programming tutorial from someone who is proficient in the business appreciated. Whether it's bash or python or C is just a flavor and a bit of an extra challenge!

I'm not sure what it is, but your videos, no matter how long, are engaging enough where I don't notice the time (until my wife yells about dinner getting cold ;). I've said this before -- keep the bugs, keep the typos, keep the stuff others would normally edit out. This is what makes this content "real" for me. Of course, it's also very entertaining watching how amazed you are when your code works (as if you expected it to crash the universe...lol).

Wow, what an experience this one was! If I don't continually add to a comment as I watch, I can't possibly provide feedback on every single thing I loved here, but I do want to say thank you for leaving in the part where you prefixed the variable names. I feel like it puts power in the hands of the user (viewer) to discern whether to watch rather than having that decision handed down. I definitely watched it, and you were correct that some people didn't know about piping to `nl`, because that was me! :D

You could also make it fatten sparse arrays by inserting null values to get to the correct index.

To avoid trailing commas, I like to put a comma before every element except the first one. That way you don't have to repeat the "are we the last one" check for every iteration of the loop. Instead of the check for "are we the last one", we need a check to see whether or not the array has at least one element because you handle the first element explicitly so it needs to exist:

if ((${#array} == 0)) ; then
printf "[]\n"
return
fi

print "[\n${array[0]}"
for((i=1; i<${#array}; i++)) ; do
printf ",\n${array[i]}"
done
printf "\n]\n"

I’m a simple man. The video was glorious. I just wish my brain could imagine a good reason for serializing stuff into JSON!! (I mean, I understand the goodness in structured data, but just can’t cook up a usage scenario for it!) 😢
