I really loved my original Xbox - bought in a bundle with Projrct Gotham, Halo, Munch's Oddysee, and something I don't remember. It cost an  arm and a leg but I loved it. It was the only way we could get the Xbox at launch.

LAN Halo parties were amazing back then!  4 TVs and 4 Xboxes linked together with 16 players.  Golden age of gaming IMO.

this idea of unboxing a Japanese Xbox is something that everyone can enjoy!

Microsoft made the inconvenient DVD playback receiver because of licensing. DVD-Video happened to be a standard made in part by Sony and, being now a competitor to Sony, Microsoft didn't want Sony to make money on every Xbox. So, the DVD receiver was made. It was little more than an IR receiver and a hardware key to unlock the functionality in the Xbox and homebrew unlocked the functionality without the dongle.

Funnily enough, the Japanese Xbox released around the same time I was born; same day, same month, same year.

You can really tell Jon is excited to have this

For anyone wondering, the text on top of the front side of the box ("Xbox プラチナパック") means "Xbox Platinum Pack".

Japan also uses the same NTSC marked "NTSC/J". Unlike NTSC vs PAL which is different in resolution and refresh rate, NTSC/U vs NTSC/J is pretty much the same.

I'll never forget the release of Halo 2. That game absorbed our entire lives for like a solid year. Every damn weekend we were playing it. I remember being absolutely wowed by the ability to dual wield lol.

Damn, that's literally a time capsule. I missed out on the OG Xbox so this is cool to see. More content like this is for sure welcome! 👍

That’s so cool . I remember my Xbox form 2003 .. it’s nice seeing Microsoft being serious about games now a days.

Region locking games sometimes is done to prevent people buying the cheaper copy of a game. I know in japan a lot of games go for around 9000 yen(which until recent years was about 80$) when they were selling for 60 or less in America. while not region locked this also might have to do with some games not having the Japanese text available on steam like final fantasy 13(could just be licensing also I don't have inside knowledge. some switch games do this too). The Xbox was also infamous in japan for not being completely translated into Japanese which hurt its sales well into the 360 era(maybe still to this day I haven't kept up with sales in japan)

I imported a Controller S from Japan before they were released here. Was sooo pleased to do so as I wasn't fond of the Duke. Was a great improvement IMO

I have a black, Green and Blue S Type controllers. I still remember when Halo 2 released, I made a T shirt with the Halo 2 logo on it in art class because I loved the game so much.

What an amazing piece of history. Love it

We love our 20 year old unboxings! Keep em coming! 😝

I remember when my mom bought us an Xbox from Target. It came with Star Wars The Clone Wars and Tetris in a double pack and S controller. I had never heard of Xbox before and was more of PlayStation fan. Needless to say it quickly became my brother and mines favorite console with Halo Combat Evolved. For it's time the console was a headed of it's time with the hard drive and online Xbox Live.

I think the s type controller is brilliant. I like the little buttons below the sticks they are close to hand for easy access.

Saw your tweet and got so excited

NTSC is a video standard, not a video game console region. Japan also uses the NTSC standard, it's not just used in North America
