The shots of Mount St Helens are from a series of real still photographs melded into a moving video. The forest surrounding the volcano was flattened in seconds. It was as if a nuclear bomb had been detonated. Massive mud flows destroyed a lot too. My father was in Oregon, a state away, when the ash was falling like thick snow.

I'm Gen x too, and I would never tell anyone that they haven't been through rough times. Every generation has hard times

2:28 The footage of St. Helens is from a series of still photos that caught the initial landslide. I share a birthday with that event and see the mountain everyday on my walks.

The doctor that you see when they discuss the AIDS epidemic should be familiar to a lot of people ... HIV is the name of the virus, AIDS is the name of the disease it causes.

I picked berries on Mt. St. Helens a year before it exploded. A friend was camping that Sunday morning and the flakes starting coming down like snow and they barely escaped in a car covered in ash.

One of the problems with the Union Carbide gas leak in India, was that India, at that time, had very lacks or no safety regulations. The result of that was India today has more stringent safety regulations.

I was 16 years old, sitting in the emergency room with a broken knee waiting to see the doctor... we were ALL watching the shuttle launch..... and then it happened and the ENTIRE ER went silent...from the doctors to the nurses... even the crying baby.... everyone was staring is utter disbelief at the TVs.... for a good 30 seconds the ER was dead silent..... we were in complete shock.

I grew up in Chicago. That Tylenol (Paracetamol, aka Acetaminophen) was very scary for is, since this was local to us. The safety seals on products today, are the aftermath from this Tylenol poisoning.

The man who saw Mt St Helena erupt was a volcanic scientist who was on the mountain studying it when it erupted and I’m pretty sure that was real footage

Before the Tylenol murders, boxes were just average boxes, easily opened, with no shrink-type plastic causing you to resort to swearing in the hopes of getting into the bottle.

They made a big deal about a teacher going up in the space shuttle so they played the launch in many classrooms across the country it was my junior year of high school we would never forget this moment.

the largest living earwig species was the Saint Helena Earwig (Labidura herculeana), it went extinct when Mount St Helens blew.

11:30 this footage is from Mayday(aka Air Crash Investigation)
It's a great series. The 1st half follows the passenger's/crew's story and events that day if anyone survived or their family more often than not.
The 2nd follows the investigation process and changes that they made in safety for the industry.

Mt St Helens 1980 eruption was a lateral eruption that was caused by a magnitude 5 earthquake that caused the face of the mountain to collapse, releasing pressure on the Dacite magma inside, causing the eruption. Dacite is extremely thick and viscous, almost like taffy, and full of gases, which is why it erupted so violently. If you see it today, you can see how smaller Dacite eruptions since have created a Dacite dome in the caldera, thus starting the rebuilding of the volcano.

The ash from Mt St Helens was everywhere! We bought a brand new car that had been full of ash. It had so many electrical problems.

I’m pretty sure the Ethiopian famine was orchestrated for purposes of war. Like they said, the journalists had to “smuggle out” footage for people to know. But I do think agriculture struggle was real as well.
