It's so funny to read comments on Sutherland's videos. I didn't know opera fans behave like Madonna vs Lady Gaga fans. We all know Callas is good, Sutherland too. It's not the end of the world, people.

There will forever be a debate about who was foremost of the Norma's of the 20th century.   I think we should simply be grateful for both of them.   Maria Callas brought the opera back to the repertoire and was unmatched in her emotional expression in  the role.   Joan Sutherland reinforced Callas's restoration of this great opera through her perfect technical perfection in its daunting music.   I cannot choose between them:   Callas the emotional perfectionist, Sutherland the technical/vocal perfectionist.  No need to choose or debate:   just listen to them BOTH and enjoy!

So that's what is performed at the world famous landmark from the land down under!

I have the dvd 📀 of this but am watching it in the dentist office while my mom is getting worked on. Thank you to whoever uploaded it it’s a treat to be able to bring Joan Sutherland with me

Long, long ago... some time in the 1970s when I was studying music, I fell in love with opera because of this amazing aria.  At the time I knew very little about opera, but this was just so captivating and wonderful.  Casta Diva has stayed with me ever since....

Joan is 52 here! Amazing!

Joan Sutherland - the greatest thing ever to come out of Australia.

How Could anyone think opera is dull or boring after seeing this performance? It has all the drama and pathos could one desire in an experience. Thanks so much for posting since I would never have had an opportunity to see this live. In closing, Joan is a goddess. And her acting is just to my taste; passionate but reserved. Also Elkins is great!

la divina  la stupenda e la superbad Callas  Sutherland  e Caballet  le piu  grandiose interpetre della lirica del 20th  secolo

Bravo la Sutherland che pronuncia senza accento inglese, meravigliosa Norma

Bel canto opus by the beloved Bellini (music) with a libretto by Felice Romani ; with the  lovely Dame Joan Sutherland in the title role. I adore the arias and the duets.

There never was nor ever will be a soprano to match Dame Joan. I had the great fortune to see her at the Metropolitan  Opera. And now she is holding master classes for the Archangels.

Is wonderful and absolutely brilliant      ❤

Joan Sutherland sang Norma everywhere until the end of her career.  For some reason the Met in New York City did not bring her back in Norma after her performances in the 1969/70 and 1970/71 seasons.

Seu dueto in mia man, com Pollione, é imbatível.

As for mastery and brilliance of technical control, and for the beauty and power of her upper register, Sutherland tops Callas every time.

This is one of the greatest moments in all opera and a glorious moment in the history of humanity.  Oh, tragedy that Bellini had to die so young.

Tinc que sortir , ho escolto quan arribi a casa , apres midi ,  vaig al treball de quirofan ....❤
