The idea that they were a solid 2nd Founding chapter who were subsequently wiped out or were decimated so thoroughly that they couldn't recover and carry on their original geneseed line isn't far fetched at all. It's happened numerous times before - a chapter gets wiped, the heraldry and history is continued on when the chapter is essentially "revived" in a later founding.

One possibility is that the reason they mostly resemble Raven Guard geneseed but lack a certain flaw common to other successors ties into them being (potentially) descended from the Raptor project from the time of the heresy. The geneseed used in that project was pure samples from a secret vault on Terra, so it's possible that that stock simply hadn't developed the flaw that would later be common in the Raven Guard?

Man, if I had a nickel for each time that a bunch of Night Lords took over a Raven Guard Successor Chapter, I’d have two nickels.

Which isn’t a lot, but it’s still weird that it happened twice.

You know what I always wondered?

With so many chapters out there, and so little oversight.

Why didn't the Alpha legion ever just fully take over a loyalist chapter and impersonate them?

Aslong as they kept sending Geneseed from the original chapter to terra. No one would ever figure it out.

Theory: During one of the times the Raptors chapter were destroyed, they were brought back by a contingent of (loyalist?) alpha legionnaires. The AL has a connection to the RG given the events in Deliverance Lost. Becoming the new Raptors could either be seen as some sort of redemption (if loyalist) or smug ironic mockery (if undercover traitors). The AL got away with some serious tech which could potentially enable them to manufacture genetic flaws. They also share a penchant for stealth warfare.

Nice one. Would have been cool to touch on the old blue and gold Raptor Legion version of the chapter from the Rogue Trader era as well

When I first got into 40K I was a huge Raptors fan. This was before the Raptors got a lot of lore and even before 1d4chan and its "Reasonable Marines" meme. However now that I have a homebrew Raven Guard successor chapter of my own to play around with.
