The biggest thing you need to consider regarding this song is the social situation. This was one of the biggest songs of the Protest Song genre. Race riots - MLK was killed the year before, we were in the height of the Vietnam war, the Kent State shootings were the next year, religion was being overhauled - Time Magazine had put "Is God Dead" on the cover a few years before and there was a big Jesus Movement on college campuses. The 5th Dimension was singing about The Age of Aquarius. We were becoming aware of environmental concerns with the help of scientists like Jacque Cousteau. It seemed to a lot of us like the world was becoming undone. There was a lot of social upheaval. This song really hit a nerve!

⏳🌎 "He's taken everything this old earth can give, and he ain't put back nothin'" is the line that always hits me. 🙏 ...for someone else in the comments too, I see.

This was a really great reaction. Thanks for doing it. I was 12 when it came out and it definitely felt like a warning to mankind at the time. All these years later, we can see that the timeline in the song is way longer than what we are seeing in real time.

I loved how it called out man’s waste of earth and humanity. Was only 14 but I got it.

That is definitely a very interesting and clever song!🎵I think the repetitive nature of the melody and the key changes  emphasize perfectly and keeps the focus on the  foreboding lyrics. And it's chilling to think that  some of the predictions of the lyrics are already happening today!

I have actually never watched the film Metropolis, but after seeing the scenes in the video of the song, i'm intrigued!🎥🎞

Thank you so much for your brilliant analysis of this interesting song, Sir Hairless!🙏❤Loved your insightful commentary and everything you explained on the musical foundation of the song!

I can remember as a child hearing this for the 1st time and it scared me so badly. I prayed that I wouldn't live that long to experience all that. Thoughts of a child without a knowledge of actual time. 😅

Your analysis allowed me to hear elements I never paid attention to. Well done. I’ve listened to this song since it release. Excellent breakdown

Metropolis is an absolutely amazing movie and should definitely be seen by anybody who has any interest in the Arts.

Fritz Lang was an amazing director. Among other things he did was to invented the rocket launch countdown. For his 1929 film Woman in the Moon (Frau im Mond)  he had the countdown as a means of heightening the dramatic tension.

Additionally Lang's absolutely masterful debut into the realm of "Talking" Motion Pictures was the film called "𝗠", in which Lang invented the psychological thriller genre and it is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential talking films of the 1900s.

In the early 80s New Wave music producer Giorgio Moroder spent a good deal of time and money tracking down as much lost footage from Metropolis as he could and re-released it with a New Wave soundtrack.

At the time, the film purists described it as like pissing on a Rembrandt but (as is so often the case) academia was about 40 years behind the times and Moroder's efforts are now undersfood as a respected and intrical chapter in the film's history.

Among other things, Moroder took what was then perceived as a classic but nonetheless obscure silent movie and gave it a platform that it would never otherwise have. In so doing, he sparked a lot more interest in Metropolis which then resulted in the discovery of 25 minutes worth of film that had not been seen since 1927. This lost 25 minutes plus other resulted in a re-release in 2010 that is missing only about 5 minutes if its original runtime of 2 hours and 36 minutes.

So as far as Metropolis goes, I would say that the Giorgio Morodor version with its 80s soundtrack is probably the most accessible and probably the one that I would recommend, where is the 2010 reissue is probably as close to Fritz Lang's vision as you're going to find.

I would also highly, highly recommend 𝗠. I saw it in film class 40 years ago and it's still disturbs me.

Favorite part..."...He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing.." Always gives me some kind of chills

This is one of those songs that make you think. It's eerie how accurate it is. Thank you for reacting to this song.

I had forgotten about this song. Remember it playing when I was a kid. Nice shirt Sir Hairless, looks nice on you. And thank you your reaction.

I'm so glad that you were the one to react to this. I've been trying to have someone do that for a long time. It's one of my favorite songs even if I was very young when it came out.

Hell i Love that Song. I already forgotten that Song. I listen to it a Lot in my youth :_eggDisco::_eggDisco::_eggShocked:

Fun fact: Denny Zager became a luthier living in or near Lincoln, Nebraska. He took low end Martin guitars and modified them to be more playable and sold them on eBay as EZ-Play. I own one! It has a Spruce top with Mahogany sides and back, and is signed by Denny Zager on the back.  I believe he also still played gigs.  The song is terrific. I loved the way you broke it down.

I remember this, it was a “protest” song. My friends and I used to sing along, and we felt every word! 👊🤜👊

I loved this song when I first heard it in 1969 because it grabbed my attention and never let go. It was catchy enough (with plenty of lyrical philosophical tentacles to remain embedded in my brain) to never get boring. It was also genius in that, as we passed through our decades (I was 14yo in 1969), we looked for the prophetic pronouncements to resonate, but hoped to retain some of our innocence. :face-red-heart-shape::eyes-purple-crying:

While not having the musical training you have, I really appreciate your analyses, and your obvious actual appreciation for music.

I heard this song in the 70's and fell in love with it. It was soo different from anything else and had a haunted quality to it. Time moved on and years later it came on the radio and I really listened to the words, dissected them, and wow what a dark song it is. Going to look them up now and see what else they did.

As a Nebraskan, I always enjoyed the fact that the duo are fellow Nebraskans. This reaction was totally unexpected!  Thanks for the in-depth review!
