The man who loves walking will go farther than the man who loves the destination.

"Pressure kills what passion built."

This video is bigger than gaming

tldr: do it for the love of the game (literal)

you can't beat the guy who's having fun

I still remember the moment my mindset shifted in terms of overwatch. I played ow1 for about 2.5 years before it became ow2 and I was around mid to high diamond level. I had come from previous fps games had really good mechanics. 99 percent of the time i was the best dps in the lobby but not winning my games because of other major mistakes. I was content with losing my games and just blaming my supports for not healing me. One day I queued comp very late at night (long que times) and joined a death match waiting lobby. There was a single player there by the name of Hulki. He was a top 500 hanzo player and I happened to be maining hanzo as well. He proceeded to destroy me for about 20 minutes. At first I was going to leave like a coward but I became fascinated with some of the things he was doing and started trying to mimic them. What stood out to me the most was how he was never ego driven even while diffing me on my best hero. Not a single emote voice line or tbag. I think it made it easier to stay and try to learn from him because he never taunted me. This interaction was a blessing that im still benefitting from in many different areas today. I am now an ego less gm4 player that loves to find ways to improve and I owe it to him. I hope hes doing well

More people need to adopt fighting game mentality. Losses do not define you. In fact, losses often present you the biggest opportunity: to learn how to play against better players and to sharply highlight your weaknesses. Another big thing is recognizing you are losing IN THE MOMENT. The game has not ended yet, it is always winnable. The game state is always evolving. Making adjustments can often swing the momentum of the game. Mentally checking out after losing first round will lose you 100% of games, trying to adapt and come back will win you a non insignificant portion of those games. Focusing only on wins/losses is the quickest way to stunt your progress and absolves you of any accountability in your own ranked climb.

I definitely needed this.

I was hired at my company because I knew how to do graphic design and photography, and I like manipulating data with excel, so I have even our manager of operations coming to me for help with trying to find specific data sets or taking photos and videos of corporate events.  When I was in school for these, I didn't learn for the grade.  I did it because I was genuinely interested.  Autotelicity.

Back in the late '90s, I was the best player among my friends at both Terminal Velocity on PC and GoldenEye on N64.  I just loved playing these games.

But in Overwatch, I've been at the bottom of Gold ever since competitive was introduced.  Yes, for 10 years.  That means, yes, I improved alongside all of the other low Gold players, but all of my friends hit Master+ and they keep asking me when I'll get there.
I tied too much of my gameplay to those external factors.  I stopped loving the process.  Now I understand.

Thank you.

I actually teach art, particularly illustration. Many students come to me wanting to make crazy cool comic art and such, but are not stoked about learing the fundamentals. They dodge perspective, proportions, line weight, tangents, composition and construction. But they always ask "how do you get better?!". And what i would always tell them is that "falling kn love with the process is paramount to this process. If you don't actually love drawing as oppose to drawing cool things you're gonna struggle." Getting that dopamine hit from being able to execute a look or atmosphere that you have in your head and nerding out about everything from digital burshes to tooth of paper are evidence of this aesthetic appreciation that great artists have that pain by numbers artists do not. But now I actually have a word for it thnx to this video. The love of the journey, the struggle, the sweat, the discovery. Not necessarily the destination, the product. "You need to learn to fall in love with the process, not the promise of the product".

there is an english saying "enjoy the destination and savour the journey"

This video was eye opening, it made me realize I started losing why I even began my hobbies in the first place, not just gaming.

now apply that to life

I think I finally somewhat tapped into the autotelic mindset.

In the past I used to always stop playing after reaching my peak of Plat in OW. I thought I was preserving my rank that way, but it really just made me a fraud, because I was never actually playing plat-level games against other plat players and caused me to get stuck in Gold quite a lot.

Recently I have picked up OW again and this time I'm older and wiser and don't really care for my rank. I just play and the rank is a byproduct. I have not only reached plat, but have consistently stayed plat, which is an improvement compared to the past where I'd always drop down to Gold.

After watching this, things started making so much sense for me

I had played Overwatch for a while, and other team-based games, because I loved the team-play, but I felt that no matter how much I tried, I would end up losing, and I would get very frustrated, and I'm especially sensitive to when my teammates would get upset because I would feel that guilt and blame on myself
But only a year ago, I started playing Dead by Daylight. I would play the killer role, and when I started out, I was so interested in the game and in learning that losses didn't matter to me. Also, because the killer is a solo role, I didn't feel this pressure from my team to do better, and I started getting better faster than I had improved at any other game before, to the point where I was getting better than the people who originally introduced me to the game
Given Overwatch and Dead by Daylight are two very different games, this video really put into perspective how much easier it is for me to improve when I don't feel pressured about what others think, and the results, and I only care about how I can improve and just enjoy the process

the importance of detatchment from losses and staying positive really cant be overstated, I just managed to hit GM on dps in Overwatch for the first time, and like half of my success in the last season I would say is a mindset shift, its so easy to just give up when being rolled on like the first round for example. Before something like that used to tilt me, but now I mostly see it as an opertunity to try even harder. I developed this mentality by playing with a close friend as we were rankin up, luckily we started at pretty much the exact same rank and just having someone next to u to keep u positive whenever one of u start tilting did so much for our winrate. No game is truely lost until its over

Im not really interested in getting better at videogames, but in animation/drawing. I think this is literaly a life saver for everyone that wants to do something difficult for a living (regardless of scale) The mental part of it is so important, and I often struggle with that. I just want to thank you really, been having a rough month
