From what I learned from growing up during the Cold War was that if the things ever escalated into a real full nuclear war is that you're best off heading toward ground zero instead of away from it or toward a bunker because in the long run your better off dying in a nuclear blast than trying to survive whatever happens afterwards no matter if your in a zone far from the blasts or hunkered down in a bunker. The long and short of it is that in the event of a civilization ending war occurring the problems caused by lack of food/supplies along with other issues means that only a small percentage of people have a chance to survive (likely the one's who are no longer dependent on society/civilization or who could easily make the transition) and anyone that is dependent on either society or their own stock pile of supplies are living on borrowed time. My guess is that is around 99% of the population in most developed countries so the odds of anyone reading this surviving WW 3 is about slim to none.

Back in the 1980s (as a kid) my friends all agreed that in case of such a situation we would head towards ground 0 so as to not be one of the unlucky "survivors". One of us (not me) even had this bright idea (apparently not realizing how an airburst or even a bomb in general actually works) of intercepting the missile with their body to save lives.

There are sooo many other things that are not mentioned that are equally important;
-Draft: Active duty remain in place, reservist & retirees get recalled before "the draft",
-Counterforce vs Countervalue targets are a must to know,
-There are so many other factors but..........

Drafting is such a fucked up situation for civilians at this point. They would probably change locations to secret places with shittier living conditions, because of course the enemy is gonna nuke training installations.
