We kayaked across Lake Kivu in Rwanda, one of the world's deadliest lakes. We also explored Napoleon Island and came face-to-face with thousands of wild bats.

Lake Kivu is one of Africa's Great Lakes, sitting between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is also one of the world's most unusual and potentially dangerous lakes, with huge amounts of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide beneath its surface.
So naturally… we decided to kayak across it. 😅

In this Rwanda travel vlog, we explore Lake Kivu from the water, surrounded by incredible mountains, islands and some of the most spectacular scenery we've seen in Rwanda.
We also make our way to Napoleon Island, one of the most fascinating islands on Lake Kivu, where we discover an enormous colony of fruit bats living in the wild. Getting surrounded by thousands of bats flying around the island was definitely not something we expected!

But with Lake Kivu being known as one of the world's “Killer Lakes”, the big question is: was it actually safe to kayak across it?
