These lines  are good as springboards for your own ideas. This can be achieved by using fragments of the lines. They  also good when used in combination with the CAGED system. They also work well as warm up exercises.

No one goes into the weeds like Chase. Can't wait to start this one!

The road song released in1972, 1980 Pat had a brain surgery, the book published in 1989…..
And he did use those lines or small ideas you shown, of course not exactly the same, in later recordings.
Pat is well known for long 8th or 16th lines, impression and the great stream are good examples.
The book did show how to connect chords, in Phrase III and Nadine .
Pat’s student Tony Baruso, wrote the book, don’t know how much Pat involved, but seems most are Pat’s ideas.

It gives me new trails and idea to pursue...

I like the book and your suggestions are valuable. Although my problem with this book is actually what to play over the chord changes on an actual song! 😅

I like how you break down the lines into their signature components. There's another Creative Force DVD set where Pat plays all the lines generally as shown in linear expressions. Also I naturally took 4 note segments (cells) from the lines and figured out how to connect them by where they tended to land on the next target note.

Amazing video on the Linear Expressions Chase 🙏🎸 I knew it was going to be good but you went above and beyond as always! Best to you and yours, hope you have a wonderful weekend

Thank you Chase. This is really interesting. I'm working through the book and this is very useful.

I have just started working on this book and I think the book itself is an idea that you add to your arsenal of ideas learned from musical theory and memorized licks.  So far it has helped me get out of the stuck rut of playing.  great video sir.

I really appreciate what you are saying about Linear Expressions. I've studied those lines and Pats work quite a bit. I look at those lines almost as stream of consciousness lines that were written down on paper. But dig into Steve Kahn's work on Pat's early solos and you'll see similar but very different ideas all over the place.

Excellent work again!

Nice one Chase. Good to see the entire video and what you found out! Thanks for this.

thank you for this lesson!!!

Yes!

Killer lesson brother! You really break it down 🙌

great lesson!!

It's semms that cromátic Sistem of Martino it's a aumented and diminish chords a half of rest chords

Thank you, Chase, for making this video, since a lot of the content by people who teach this method is simply not useful, for the reasons you explained. It also happens sometimes with followers of Barry Harris.  Your way of approaching Jazz education is more like Jen's Larsen and aligns with how I feel about music as a language. One of the benefits of this approach is that is teaching music, not just Jazz.  Cheers! - Leo

Very intersting Chase, it's so easy to get lost in books while it's so easy to listen. About Linear Expressions, It felt exactly like you described it : to long core phrases, same chord all the time, no links between positions => don't really know what to do with it, and it doesn't really sound like jazz improvisations I use to listen to. Thanks for the great content !

This book is one of the best, you can use it simply as warm up etudes, and of course you have to use it smart if one want to apply it. I’ve been using different rhythm patterns to play it, and picking small motifs or patterns, analysis and develop it, like what you do. Sid Jacob have a great book teaching this concept.
You idea is commonly practiced already, good to point it out…..but your comment is very unfair to this great book!
