Welcome to this new urban immersion in the heart of Yopougon, the largest district of Abidjan.
This nighttime stroll was filmed on a Friday evening around 8 p.m., during the rainy season in Abidjan. At this time of year, downpours are frequent, and some people prefer to limit their travel or return home earlier. This may explain why some areas seem less crowded than at other times of the year, even though Yopougon remains particularly lively.
If you're looking for Abidjan in the rain, the rainy season in Abidjan, nightlife during the rainy season, or simply the real atmosphere of Abidjan at night, this video offers an authentic glimpse into the daily lives of its residents.
Our journey begins at the Siporex intersection, one of Yopougon's main crossroads. Shops are still open, numerous vendors occupy the sidewalks, while taxis, minibuses, motorcycles, and pedestrians share the dense traffic characteristic of the district.
We then continue to the Ficgayo area, where large tarpaulins have been erected, likely in preparation for a wake, a common sight in several neighborhoods of Abidjan.
A few minutes later, we discover the Cosmos Hypermarket, recognizable by its imposing modern building and vast parking lot, one of the main commercial hubs in western Abidjan.
Our walk continues towards the Keneya Crossroads, a well-lit area where restaurants, shops, storefronts, and traffic reflect the dynamism of Yopougon.
Finally, we reach the famous Rue Princesse, long considered the heart of Abidjan's nightlife and one of the most celebrated party spots in West Africa. During the 1990s and 2000s, its numerous maquis (open-air bars), bars, and nightclubs made it a symbol of Ivorian culture, particularly zouglou and coupé-décalé music. Starting in 2011, major sanitation and restructuring projects have profoundly transformed this thoroughfare. Today, Rue Princesse still boasts several maquis (open-air restaurants), eateries, and entertainment venues, but its atmosphere is calmer than in its heyday.
We then leave the main thoroughfare to explore the neighborhoods behind Rue Princesse before returning to conclude this immersion into the heart of Yopougon's nightlife.
This video offers a glimpse into the true atmosphere of Abidjan at night, amidst shops, traffic, working-class neighborhoods, iconic landmarks, and daily life, during the rainy season in Ivory Coast.
