THE DEATH OF THE DOLLAR MENU — BEN AVERY

Ben talks homesickness, family holidays, the fattest city in America, and the unforgivable crime of wearing pajamas to Walmart. He argues that there should be some minimum standard of self-respect when leaving the house, because seeing someone in Cookie Monster sweatpants and bunny slippers wandering around a supermarket is apparently enough to kill a little piece of his soul.

Being homesick, Ben finds increasingly deranged ways to recreate Texas from afar — watching Buc-ee’s walkthroughs and listening to evangelical church choirs. Then he discovers the ultimate homesickness content: “24 Hours in the Most Obese City in the World,” filmed in McAllen, Texas, a city he used to visit with his family.

Ben gets into the strange genre of foreigners travelling to America specifically to document how fat everyone is, the average American town functioning like one enormous drive-thru, and the state of fast food. He also mourns the death of the dollar menu and what it represented about American life.
