Big Tech wants you paying monthly forever, so I replaced Spotify, Netflix, and Google Drive with my own server instead. Here's everything I use now instead of Big Tech!

my only regret after self-hosting for over 2 years: should have bought them HDDs and SSDs while they were cheap...

The day our internet went out and plex wouldnt let me watch a local movie on my NAS because there was no internet connection, was the day I moved to jellyfin.

Having your own NAS is underrated.

Backup: I adhere to a different rule Sparse saving. 3+2+1 is great for large scale operations, but for the everyday user Sparse backup is better. Once a month I backup my personal files which is retained as a compressed image file. This gets stored locally and remotely. These are the things I can't lose and easily recover from elsewhere. I don't back up game installations but I will backup game save files. I don't backup game mods, just the load order of the mods I was using. I don't back up movie files which I can recover elsewhere, but I do backup my personal videos, audio notes, and projects. Backup the things that are irreplaceable, and don't waste space backing up those things that are easily replaced or downloadable. This really cuts down on what you're backing up. My backups at most are 10gb and stored in a dedicated free cloud service.

I think that the solution to data centers is self hosting.

Great video. Thanks for highlighting the downsides of self hosting. Like other DIY hobbies, it can definitely be a learning curve, time sink, and maintenance hassle. ESPECIALLY things that other people rely on.

Definitely agree with the suggestion to start slow, test things out and document along the way.

Now if I only have a bunch of hard drives, a NAS bay, and a lot of money for electricity to do this

What really helped me was setting up VirtualBox test machine for my NAS OS of choice (TrueNas) learning the setup and configuration then installing the apps I want to run like immich. Once I had things sorted out and solid I moved to building and configuring my production server. It made getting a nice clean install so much easier. No ghost remnants of "deleted" apps or misconfigs to cause trouble down the road.

Small correction Emby can function exactly like Jellyfinn. You don't have to set up an online account. You just create local accounts instead of online and you can stream your media to remote locations for free.

Just migrated to CachyOS last week, decided to offload Plex & Calibre to my Synology NAS yesterday. Biggest issues were dealing with permissions, but eventually got it all working. Still have other projects I would like to take on so I appreciate your videos and encouragement! Also, strongly advise in buying a UPS for your server/NAS, at least if it's data you care about.

@tjs114 2 months ago

Rather than building multiple servers, the sanity saving answer for many people will be a home NAS (network attached storage). I would suggest at least a 4 disk NAS and brand-wise I'm agnostic as they all have their positives and negatives. The upside is that the NAS companies have already compiled the apps you are likely to want so instead of having a backup server, a cloud drive server and a multimedia server running on different boxes, you have them all on one.

6:23 - Config as code is a very novel concept. You can put all those configs into a git repository, and now you have all the changes along with commit notes about what the heck you were thinking. If you really don't want to figure out how to self-host git, you can use a private github project. Just make sure it really is private and you keep it that way.
