This is Dan McGee, CEO of Smart Square Tools. We are experiencing a great influx of orders and are working at ramping up production. We deeply appreciate your responses, thank you.

We have changed the website to reflect the stock that we will soon have so orders can be placed with the understanding that there will be a waiting period. This waiting period will be accompanied by consistent communication regarding the status of your orders. Thank you for your patience and for supporting a USA made product like Smart Square. I thank Scott, The Essential Craftsman for his high quality content!

That is a beautiful speed square. Some viewers don't need one. Some viewers can't afford one, but I am certain that 99% of the viewers WANT one.

As an old carpenter, I have learned that there are 3 types of people,  those that are good at math and those that are not. 🤔

I'm a retired cabinet maker with 45 years experience. I've got more squares than I need and I want one

Dan is the math teacher that I needed in high school. Formulas without applications meant nothing to me as a student. If I had had an application for every formula, I would have learned and retained all of them.

I'm an electrician by trade, math didn't make sense until I started bending conduit {uses trigonometry of all things}, that was my "ah-ha" moment.  Getting into electrical theory helped bunches too.

Your interview really helps illustrate the importance of classes like sewing, shop, and food science in high school.

As a welder that opening or gap for the radius to throw a square on some tubing is awesome

You said something that brought goosebumps to my neck.  Being able to connect math to a practical application in the real world did it for me.  My statics class in our large university was a real struggle. This was in the days of only having slide rules.  I had an excellent engineering professor in college (I wish I could remember his name to give him credit) and one day I stayed until everyone left and explained to him how much I was struggling to understand what we were actually doing.  I have to add I always did well in math.  In 10 minutes, he explained the "what and why" we were calculating the vectors and forces for a bridge.  I had an earlier apprentice working experience in bridge construction contract management.  That was all it took!  My light bulb turned on immediately, and I finished with a B+ for the class only due to my early lower grade struggles.  After that 10-minute explanation, my homework took 1/3 the time and I looked forward to every class.  Thanks for the memory by your few words and an excellent professor.
I just wish my calculus professor could have done the same for me.  I passed but not with flying colors.  It probably would have helped had he not spoken with such broken English.
Excellent video.  Thanks.

This has to be the best infomercial I've ever watched. Gotta love the life lessons at the end.

It's pretty rare to see tools like this made in the USA anymore, super cool

Excellent Vid! Retired plasterer here. I always enjoyed the math section of the text books used in the apprenticeship program. Think of the ornamental work that was common in the early 1900s. plaster moldings were run in place with screed templates that needed to be cut from sheet metal. Sometimes these moldings would be simple like a cornice mold, but sometimes they would run along a variable radius archway, or be mitered and an angle other than 45*, or they might even wrap around a column while changing elevation. There was a great deal of geometry involved.

I really admire the mind of an inventor, unfettered by the confines of what is known, and able to plumb the limitless possibilities of the unknown. It would be great if the lines for the curved vial on the square could be on the vial itself, but perhaps it isn't possible to have that done as accurately as his current method. Its also so cool that he not only invented these tools but makes them too!

I worked for Empire Level for a couple of decades, 87-2008.
They had a few different speed squares back then, the aluminum models were the best. The coining stamped into them and the edges machined on a CNC mill.
Later they were able to stamp them.
I was a plastics processing tech. We molded the curved vials that went into Peerless wood levels. Those replaced the glass vials of the past.
That was a cool mold.
The vials arc of those vials are no where near what you have going on there.
Empire did what they could to keep production in the United States. Some went to China, but they kept as much here as they could. Costs were a huge factor as well as competition from China who copied Empire products and flooded the market with clones.
Milwaukee Electric Tool purchased Empire Level a while ago and brought more technology into the business.
Hopefully they have succeeded.

I would bet they would be interested in your design.

Your product looks amazing!
I have modified speed squares by cutting off the edge so it could lay flat.
I made both right and left.

Wish you well!

The cinematography on the first few minutes is supreme. You could easily pull off "the most interesting man in the world".

My youngest son was an amazing musician in high school. Got A+ in all music classes, but he wasn't getting more than a C in math. I had always understood that music helped math and vice versa. Problem was, he just never saw a use for math in the "real world" and it was boring for him. He went to University and got a BA in Jazz Studies, but knew this was not going to be a quick and easy road to a career or self-sufficiency. Then he applied for and got a job as a construction labourer, which led to a carpentry apprenticeship. He had finally found a use for math and was good at it! He's now a Red Seal Journeyman Carpenter and loves what he does. He's in the commercial building sector, framing concrete forms for medium and large projects to be exact and I bet he'd love this Smart Square. Thank you for the great information!

Genius! Metric version for those of us In UK  & Europe please!!!!

That price is quite steep.

He just turned the speed square into a slow square. The level in there is genius.

One potential weakness of a movable fence is the possible presence of play. Is there an ajustment?

haha the essential craftsman was a youth leader for me when i was young he was always teach me and other boys the right ways to be a man. i have had this square for a few years now and greatly appreciate its usefulness this might be the first time that i have found something cool before he has.
