I think the character of Jack in the book shows with great respect how a perpetrator can have been a victim of violence and suffer from substance addiction and still be guilty and responsible for the damage he causes. It is a very difficult subject to address, but it is handled with great respect. The book perfectly details how Jack is a victim of both a difficult childhood and his addiction, but he is still a monster responsible for what he does to his family. If I had to summarize this story in one sentence, it would be "you are what you do with what was done to you."

In 2022 Razzie founders have gone public saying Shelley Duvall’s nomination was not deserved, not knowing at the time of her experience on the film and they regret it. However they don’t have any regrets nominating Kubrick, partly in disgust of his treatment of Duvall but also they were fans of the book and didn’t like what he did with it.
Stephen King despite not liking her portrayal of Wendy still paid tribute to her after she passed away saying she was a “Wonderful, talented, underused actor”.
She was seriously underrated I never saw her version of Wendy as weak. Agreed she’s so convincing as someone who’s been in an abusive relationship for years. She also portrays fear extremely well. She still is able to physically defend herself against Jack when she needs to. I honestly find her survival more satisfying than the movie because you feel she suffered the most and come out the end.

I wasn’t prepared for how emotional the book ending would be. That moment when Jack snaps out of it and tells Danny to run and he loves him as incredible.

The book feels like what Jack would tell you happened, but the movie's what actually happened.

I like your theory that the reason Jack appears in the photo is because the hotel has absorbed his soul and now he's part of the hotel. Meaning the next caretaker will be having a conversation with Jack's ghost.

Part of reason that Danny Lloyd's part was reduced from the original in the book may also have something to do with how many hours a child was able to work, as per Britain's labor laws. It was causing a lot of logistical issues late in the production. They started using a double in some of the shots in which you would not be able to tell that it wasn't Danny Lloyd.

The hedge animals creeped me out so much in the book.

Wendy being more ...unable to fight back, shows the strength she found inside to keep her and Danny alive

That was my favorite part of the Miniseries.
"What could YOU possibly know?"
"I know that daddy forgot to check the boiler today."
"... Nooo nooo NOOOO!!!"

I had read the book at least three times before I saw the film and I was so bothered by Jack’s characterization that I hated it for fifteen years. I finally matured enough to give it a chance again and think it’s well done, but a horrible adaptation.

I read the book when I was 16 in 2006. I remember I was working my first job and an older co worker asked me what I was doing for the summer now that school as out, and i told him I just started reading books in english (english is not my first language so it was a bit daunting for me, since i just moved to Canada less than a year before) and when I told him it was the shinning that I just finished he was like "ohhh I bet it was scary" and I remember i told him I cried at the end, that i found it more of a drama than horror (when Jack attacks himself and tells Danny he loves him) and he thought I was crazy. Anyway, 19 years later and I still tear up when I read the end. For me it was never a horror book, but a drama story that had horror elements. I still love the book and movie (although so different from one another) and I really loved how they used both Elements to make Dr Sleep a cohesive continuation (even though Kubriks interpretation was more of an inspiration rather than a book to screen story).

I thought it was implied, in the film, that Jack also had the shining, just not as strong as Danny. Halloran explained that most who have it don't know it. It was the reason the hotel could talk and influence him so easily, it also helped him see the ghosts, and be able to get have his drinks. The hotel reflecting his ability back to him so that it was stronger, as the hotel was drawing power off of Danny.

I kinda like the fact that the weird, creepy visuals aren't explained in the movie.

I just read the book before watching the movie for the 45th anniversary in theaters and I liked the book SOOOO much more for providing a deep dive into the psychology of each character, which showed them how human they genuinely were to me.

I was one of those people who saw the movie in the theatre after having recently finished the book. I HATED the movie. It took me 20 years to watch the movie again. I have come to appreciate it's greatness but it was a long struggle. The movie never should have been called "The Shining". It raised expectations that it was going to be like the book. Also, the movie should never have said it was "based" on the novel, a more accurate description would have been "inspired" by the book. I loved your video and I would be remiss if I didn't compliment you on your correct use of the phrase "I could not care less" I hear so many people say "I could care less". Bravo.

One of the best parts of the book was how the hotel revealed to Danny it took over Jacks body by smashing his face in with the mallet while dancing an eerie shuffling polka dance.

I read the book when it came out and I also saw the movie when it came out. I’ll never forget seeing the movie because I rode my bike in the Central Valley, California heat for about an hour and a half - which I had never done before - to the theater.
Was super exhausted when I got there so I just take it to my seat and I remember this movie just washing over me like magic and I loved it so much. We read the book recently and yeah it’s fantastic. They’re two different. Excellent works of art.

The descent of Jack into madness in the book is so brilliantly and poignantly handled that it's astonishing that it doesn't appear in the movie. Every time I read the novel I am literally hoping Jack will make better decisions (as if I don't know how it'd going to end up!). In the movie, he is batshit from the get-go. The book is a flawed man, trying to do the right thing, and then being overpowered by supernatural darkness over which he has little control. It takes advatage of his flaws and magnifies them. It is the opposite of the hero's journey, and that makes it horror.

Only partway through but I heard once that Robin Williams was on the list to potentially play Jack and I think that would have fixed a lot of the character's problems

I  always felt that the shining-ability was never truly established in the film. Like Kubrick didn't really want to put in there, but sometimes he had to anyway.
