During the summer of 2026 I met Zarah, a 21 year old girl originally from Iran who is currently in London.
Having never smoked cigarettes before Zarah wanted to try smoking to see what smoking cigarettes was like. This shoot chronicles Zarah smoking for the first time.
She smokes 6 cigarettes in this extended clip and improves as the afternoon draws on. Zarah is not too proficient in English and as I coach her how to inhale the smoke into her lungs she says:
“I put it in here?”
indicating with her hands where her lungs are located. She continues by asking me:
“It should go in?”
The on-topic dialogue continues throughout the scene as Zarah continues to learn – and indeed make progress! Towards the conclusion of our afternoon filming she says that she's becoming an 'expert'.
I ask her if the smoke feels nice when she breathes it in. She replies:
“It feels different”,
and she volunteers:
“I think I've learned.”
As a novice smoker Zarah coughs frequently during the filming as the smoke enters her lungs – a sensation she's not yet accustomed to. Interestingly, Zarah has an older sister who is a regular smoker. I suggest that the two of them may smoke together sometime, a suggestion that Zarah does not reject!
After sampling a few cigarettes in a couple of hours Zarah does start to improve. Clearly not (yet?) an accomplished smoker, one can nonetheless see the improvement that she's made. The coughing becomes less frequent and Zarah begins to relish the sensation of the smoke as she tentatively inhales it into her body.
