Hello there and welcome to my video. In this video, I'll be fixing a broken HP Z4 G4 x299 workstation that refuses to give any display output, all while throwing an error code that... doesn't exist?! Let's see just how many parts of this system are going to need to be replaced!

I've seen bios corruption that didn't allow anything to power on, no 5v on the USB, no cpu power, no cpu fan spin. After flashing a new bios everything worked just fine.

You don't just deserve a 👍 but a medal, and award for stamina. I take some pleasure at your struggles - been there, done most of that, but these are very valuable experiences, and looking back a knowing smile and chuckle 🤭

Great repair/replacement video. Glad you included all the detours.

I just went through this exact same thing. Thank you for making this video, it saved me from wasting money on another CPU that wouldn't work with my board.

Actually, went into this situation from the other side.
Bought VERY CHEAP original X299 motherboard,the top of the line one.
And, bought the Xeon cpu,as well.
Oh, the joy ,in discovery of the un-ability of Xeon posting on X299!!!!!
Had to trade it.

The Workstation Xeon Motherboard is the better of the two types. Also 2133Mhz Ram may be JEDEC speed, but it is still overclocked and not standard.

@techo.410 2 months ago

you know, im kind of suspecting that maybe a bios corruption is at hand here
a corrupt bios can make the motherboard do some weird stuff like that but i may be wrong
its just a thought

Having extra hardware might not be a bad thing. I might consider keeping all of the extra hardware.

15:28 this is why ya should always have a low tear CPU on hand, like a i3 or i5 or one of the lower power variants.

ALOT older system but i had an gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3H which had the same behavior as this mobo had. fixed it by flashing the bios chips. and in my experience reflashing the bios via a CH341A chip programmer (make sure its running in 3.3v) is the one thing many people dont do but is genuinely a good thing to try. (make sure to make a dump of the original beforehand though)

also: make sure there are no pins bent in the socket. lga 2011/2066 are known for not working when having bent pins.

I’ve experienced a system where it had almost the same problem. No post, but the cpu and ram did get hot.

Reseating the CPU didn’t work, reseating and changing the placement of ram didn’t work aswell.

The system powered on all by itself, and the power button was completely useless. However, after clearing out the BIOS, it booted up normally again.

CMOS battery?

@Drottninggatan2017 2 months ago

To me this sounds dangerous.
You should check out the mainboard medic and see how he always test for shorts before plugging in the power.
If you have a shorted MOSFET that can take the CPU out. You put another CPU in the and it will get shorted as well.
It just takes a couple of minutes to test the power traces. If you don't know the connector pinout the you can test on the coils.

Once that lost motherboard was delivered, the right thing to do would be to contact the seller and either offer to return it or pay for it. Keeping it after
receiving a refund is the same as stealing it.
