I will put my hands up, I was one of those players for a couple of years who would do drive 0, balance 10, tone 10, because i saw others doing it, BUT after watching many of your videos & then going to your settings, You're spot on. It just sounds so much better, more focused & adds more balls to tone going with your pedal settings. I WAS a idiot, im not anymore!! xD
I will take all the advice from Josh. The dude has 20+ yrs of experience & has the proof to back-up everything he says too. Love the videos man, Keep them coming!
Could you maybe dive more into lead tones?? & dialling in a good complimentary lead tone maybe?
I've started messing with cleaner ways to boost and tighten the signal before the amp, I've realized that tube screamers actually harm the tone sometimes, which makes sense and can be heard by how these drives affect the DI, usually resulting in a muddier and less articulate tone. To me high passing, some mid boost with eq, and sometimes some cleaner saturation or boosting can do the job better than an old-fashioned overdrive pedals.
Within 4 minutes I transformed my tone from decent to holy cow that is brutal. No more ice picky scratchy stuff. Love your stuff Josh. Been watching your content since 2019 I think. Thanks man!
I too started with drive 0, tone maxed, level maxed. As I learned more /experimented, having the level at half, and tone at half really worked better with the more modern amps. However, I will usually go to 6 or even 7 with the tone knob, and the level knob sometimes. One persons "scratchiness" is another person's "attack" and clarity. Great points discussed here sir 🙏
Awesome!!! I just got a 5150 iii. Bought a Maxon OD808 and Revv G8 pedal. I've never had a boost pedal before. I was playing around for a good 3 hours today settled on what I thought sounded the best for boost settings and I can't believe it but it's Josh's ideal settings. 😅 this post was perfect timing.
I have the Spark 2 by Positive Grid, and, man.... It is just great for practicing on!
Yeah, I guess You can use the amplifier cabinet for recording, but then again, I know You're good with all of that stuff, Josh, so that's why I'd trust You with gear and stuff!
I was shown and taught the old school way of 0 drive and adjust other knobs. Told myself why not turn the drive a bit and more then compensate here and there. Since then my drive on any overdrive pedals is never 0 whenever I boost.
Before I set up an overdrive, I always dial the amp as tight as I can first. Usually a mid-gain crunch, w/the bass control set as tight as possible without sounding anemic. I usually have the mids at noon or 1:00 and treble around 11:00.
The goal is to get the tightest palm-muted amp-sound first, then I turn on the OD.
I set the volume to 3:00, drive off and the tone at 1:00.
I don’t normally use screamers though, as they’re mids are too dark and nasally, IMO.
Although, they seem to work great w/5150/6505-tyoe amps, or really bright amps.
The best combo of that type I’ve stumbled upon is boosting the crunch channel, (not the lead channel), on a 5159/6505 with a modern Way Huge Green Rhino, they sound made for each other, IMO.
All other amps I use a brighter overdrive, like an SD-1, Berserker or a Rat, their higher center frequency seem to work better for most amps, once again, IMO.
Great informative content and conveyed in a proper way! OD boost in front a tube amp is a staple and just like you demonstrated here, even back in the days when i was tracking some demo/shit track through my Lin6 UX2, I'd have my OD808 in front for that exact purpose, also helped to give a better response and "random imperfection" to the guitar signal since those emulators back in the day where quite sterile and linear in their dynamic response.
