A year and a half ago, I released a video on this channel titled "Is the new Prius really not selling well?"
My conclusion at the time was that "saying it's not selling well is an exaggeration." This time, we'll check the answer.
In 2025, annual sales were 63,717 units, ranking 14th. This is a drop to 76.3% of the previous year's sales. The drop in ranking is a fact.
However, the reasons aren't limited to the four commonly cited online factors: "expensive," "unattractive," "image," and "economic conditions."
Based on monthly data from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and testimonies from dealerships, I'll add two less-discussed reasons.
I've owned three generations of Priuses—30-series, 50-series, and 60-series—for 13 years, accumulating approximately 150,000 km.
Moreover, this is my second 60-series. I drove a U-grade Prius from April 2023 and switched to a Prius PHEV in July 2026, 3 years and 3 months later.
As someone of the same generation who is still paying for a car that's said to be selling poorly, I'll speak without shying away from the numbers.

1:30 Have the numbers really fallen? (Actual data from 2023-2026)
3:21 Examining the four reasons on the internet one by one
6:48 The reason nobody is talking about is the "faucet"
8:53 As someone who pays for a car that's being criticized every month
10:58 The answer will be revealed this winter
▼ What you'll learn from this video:
The details of the "decline" in 2025: 63,717 units sold, 14th place, and a 76.3% decrease compared to the previous year.
The results of examining four theories—"high price," "unfashionable," "image," and "economic conditions"—one by one with data.
The true nature of the "valley" appearing in monthly sales figures (1,422 units in May 2024 / approximately 2,900 units in August 2025).
The view that the opening and closing of orders acts as a "faucet" that determines the number of units sold.
The fact that June 2026 saw 5,034 units sold, a 112.8% increase compared to the previous year, marking the first time this year that sales have exceeded the previous year's figures.

The "faucet" (relationship between order suspension and sales volume) is my observation based on dealer testimonies and monthly data. It is not Toyota's official view.
