The thing about Godzilla movies is that sometimes they're serious like this and other times, they're silly. Godzilla is truly a monster for all seasons.

Godzilla’s atomic breath is his signature weapon. A beam of pure atomic power.

This taught me a great counter example of the "don't show the monster till later" storytelling style. It's "traumatise them at the beginning and play off the PTSD".

16:09 "this would’ve been sweet on the big screen" it was.

It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

I saw this 8 times in theaters. It's not just a great kaiju film, it's a fantastic post-war drama which would be a masterpiece even without a monster.

You're right, the music heard during the Attack on Tokyo (and later during the final confrontation) is a homage: These are re-recorded Cues from Godzilla-Scores from the 1950s and 1960s, originally written by the legendary Akira Ifukube (1914-2006). If you'll ever get to the Monsterverse-movies, Godzilla: King of the Monsters liberally uses that OG Theme as well.

First Godzilla movie ever and you directly start with the best one in decades. 😄

Godzilla itself is a metaphor for nuclear war.

Godzillan Minus One is first Godzilla to win an Oscar. Movie won the Oscar for best visual effects that is impressive considering the movie only cost about $15 million to make.

🎼Helpless people on subway trains, scream bug-eyed, as he looks in on them.🎶🎵 This movie made me cry and feel good.

This is an astonishing movie. It could not have been made in Hollywood. And it was made for approximately what a Hollywood movie spends on lunch.

I'm quite surprised you hadn't done the original 1954 Godzilla film yet, given how much classic 1950s sci-fi you've done on the channel. Really wish you had seen it beforehand cuz all the Godzilla lore is so iconic that this film didn't feel the need to recap any of it. But mainly, cuz they brought back the original theme song that you were humming @39:27. No one expected it to be used, so when it was, it was a full body chills moment.

This was actually one of the best Godzilla movies I’ve ever watched. I can’t wait for minus zero to come out.

I grew up watching "old" Godzilla movies (and the cartoon) in the '70s and '80s. I'm rarely a fan of "new" iterations of the franchises I loved as a kid, but "Godzilla Minus One" was SPECTACULARLY good. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every minute, and I'm very much looking forward the the next installment in the series.

"You and Akiko are just a last dream of a dead man" is one of the most chilling things ever said in movies..that crap haunts me to this day

@richardcayer929 4 months ago

Yes, Jen. Godzilla has radioactive breath. It's represented differently in movies, but it's still his primary weapon.

One of the few Godzilla films where I'm not in a hurry for the big guy to show up because I genuinely care about the people on screen. They absolutely nailed the emotional connection.
I got to see this film in IMAX and it was a thing of beauty, as you get the full sense of menace and scale, and the quaking sound. I'd also recommend the Minus Color version for a revisit, as it effectively matches up with the aesthetic and tone of the 1954 original.

Best monster movie I've ever seen. It does such a good job making you care about the humans that you almost forget it's a Godzilla movie. Usually you WANT Godzilla to show up and wreck things, but this time, when he does, it's devastating.

Incredible what they did with so little budget.
