In 1969, someone knocked on the door of a psychiatric hospital in America. Looking timid and exhausted, they claimed to be hearing voices in their head—voices repeating words like "empty" and "hollow," and making a "thud" sound. After a brief evaluation, the individual was admitted on the grounds of mental illness. But shortly after the admission process was complete, the patient started saying the voices were completely gone and they were feeling much better. The hospital staff didn't take this seriously, assuming it was impossible for a patient to recover so quickly. So they kept this person—**who didn't actually have any mental illness at all**—in the hospital and continued to give them medication. For three whole weeks!
