The original manuscript of The Tale of Genji, written by Murasaki Shikibu, does not survive.
They say it probably burned.
And yet the tale lived on — as manuscript copies, as illustrated handscrolls, even as a bridal trousseau —
and has come down to us 1,000 years later.
