Is it easy to be vegan or vegetarian in China? 🌱
Hi! I'm Valerie, a Chinese teacher, interpreter and China trip organizer. I've been vegetarian for 13 years and have traveled to more than 40 cities across China, and surprisingly, finding vegetarian food has never been as difficult as many people imagine.
In this video, I’m sharing my personal experience of traveling around China as a vegetarian, showing you some of my favorite vegetarian canteens, and explaining why Buddhist temples play such an important role in China’s vegetarian food culture.
I also interviewed several Chinese people who became vegetarian or vegan themselves. For many of them, the decision was connected to Buddhism, compassion for animals, or their experience working in vegetarian restaurants and canteens.
And even if you're not vegetarian, Chinese vegetarian cuisine is worth trying. After several days of spicy, oily food, a simple Buddhist vegetarian buffet can be a delicious and affordable change.
