I just wanna say upfront, I'm not really super qualified to give Fangan tips since I never actually completed one, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. As long as you're having fun, thats what matters most because this is a fan project at the end of the day. I don't want anyone to feel discouraged from this video. If you want more tips that I feel are more constructive than mine, check out Star detectives "How to Make a Fangan" series. Not only has she fully completed fanganronpa, she's gone on to create multiple original visual novels too. She knows her stuff while I still have much to learn

I remember back in high school I made the blueprint for a fangan. Mine was more focused on psychological horror rather than hope vs despair.

I feel like Ronpa and Friends is an incredible example of a fangan that avoids all these plotholes, you genuinely feel bad whenever a character dies, and you see how even the protagonist doesn’t want to be right about their accusation because these are his friends.

Out of these, the one I'm most guilty of personally is ending the trial as soon once the protagonist accuses the culprit. Definitely something to keep in mind for the future

Honestly my biggest pet peeve with fangans are the overly excessive body discoveries outside of the fifth chapter. We asked for murder not body desacralization 😭

"oOOoOOOo" No but seriously. The more I thought of my own fangan Infinite Inquiry I realized I failed miserably. This really did help me realize all the needed changes I need to make in my own fangan. I really am grateful for this video for existing! I'm sure this video will also help more people aside from me!

Another pet peeve I have is when an ultimate talent isn’t exactly measurable. We got to remember, people can’t just call themselves an ultimate whenever they want, they earn it and are given it by an actual official organization. This organization measures how well a person qualifies to have an ultimate title. Because of that a talent must be measurable. So stuff like the “ultimate liar” or “ultimate beauty” and talents like that are really hard to justify being an ‘ultimate’

I feel that one thing that people should also remember is that the protagonist is also a suspect in the cases. They don't just get off scot-free because they're the player.

i’m making a satire fanganronpa that is just my friends and i but even still this video helped me a lot!

one tip when writing a fanganronpa case is to start with the closing argument (the one with the comic artstyle) and write how the murder plays out, then for the trial you’ll know what to focus on and not have to worry as much about not knowing what their talking about. it helped me a ton with my chapter 1 case, but it’s different for everyone so i can’t guarantee if it’ll 100% work

This will be useful when I get to writing my Fangan with exclusively characters my sister hates.

The trials are where I feel most fanganronpa creators fail, they always end up being too short, rushed and rather easy to figure out 'whodunnit'. Not that I can fault these fanganronpa creators either, coming up with multiple creative trials is surprisingly difficult, I've been sitting on one trial idea for 6 years, and trying to cohesively tie evidence together in a coherent manner while making sure the dialogue is well-written, yeah it's bloody hard.
Despite this I admire that there are so many Danganronpa fans out there with the passion and drive to create such great danganronpa content, like Ronpa & Friends, Danganronpa Redemption, Danganronpa V4, Danganmon and my personal favourite; Cartoons in Danganronpa.

Currently still writing my fangan, it's coming along really well! The issue is I've been writing it since 2015 and writing these things takes a long, long time to get right. I'm not even a first-time storyteller but I've been afraid to post because hypersensitive ✌😩✌ but I will try to post some tips that I've picked up!

1) Have a theme. Even if the theme is Hope VS Despair like the original, having a theme to design the world around helps get the setting, characters, color palette, motives, etc in line. I won't spoil my fangan because I do plan on publishing, but my theme is Life VS Death, with a subtheme of Free Will.

2) don't get too bent out of shape about the character designs. Don't worry if you can't perfectly replicate the art style. Its your story and yes the art style is iconic, but it's all one artist. Put your own fingerprint on it.

3) trials are hard to write :) that is all. JK. Wince is right.  Red herrings, misdirection, false clues etc. Are really helpful, but try not to make them jokes or threads that don't lead anywhere. Don't be afraid to establish plots or continue plots that come out in the trial. Trials are about bringing truth to the light, so don't be afraid to reveal truths unrelated to the murder. Itll also beef up your trial times a bit, because it may look like a long trial typed, but if you plan to add voice acting, it'll be like. 20 minutes tops. Lol

4) Talents/Ultimate titles are allowed to be reused. No one owns a job occupation. I'm in a unique situation where I had a magician before v3 came out, and I didn't change her talent after the game. Dont worry about it too much. But, if you want some really fun talents, think outside the box.

Me, who has absolutely zero plans of making a Fanganronpa but watching anyway: hmmm yes interesting

It's an old movie but I think a great film to watch for inspiration on how to write class trials is the original (1957) 12 Angry Men! Its a movie that basically takes place in a single room, about 12 jurors arguing about a murder conviction. Its an amazing exploration of how a bunch of different characters prejudices and personalities can affect a trial and how to have smaller character arcs for multiple characters. I especially like how the main character doesn't really change at all, but that his stubbornness and determination makes everybody around him slowly change (feels very danganronpa-y). Also I think its a good exploration on how and when to reveal certain parts of a murder mystery for the best dramatic effect, like having people have such a steadfast belief in something because one character knows something they don't, and how revealing that turns the trial on its head and makes things interesting, like the famous knife scene.

9:13 fuck i legitimately fantasized of a moment like this I THOUGHT I WAS ORIGINAL FOR MAKING THAT UP 😭

I am by no means a pro-writer, but having been writing for fun for over 25 years now (most of it through Written post-by-play RPGs), I have learned a few things.  I will say when coming up with a plot twist as the DR franchise is known for, come up with the plot twist ITSELF and it's result and then come up with ideas to foreshadow it.  It's something I remember from High School in one of my literature classes and why I do love the mystery genre, all the clues and hints foreshadowing something.  While I have NO plans to make my own Fangan (at best I could only do a fanfic with art since I am an artist), I still went ahead and created my own cast of DR inspired chars and even for that I came up with the basic concept and all of the plot twists involving the true nature of the setting before even coming up with these chars.  I definitely made a lot of notes.  It always helps to make notes when you have any kind of story idea.  Heck when coming up with your chars's talents, I would even say have talents you know you can portray, and if you have limited knowledge of that talent, RESEARCH it to some extent.  Heck I am already thinking of changing one of my chars' talents due to just not 'feeling it'.

Anyway, cool video Wince.

The biggest pet peeve for me is when the game isn't finished yet

I’m currently working on a fangan myself, and I knew it would be hard for me to write the trials when I already knew the outcome so I came up with an idea. I was going to give the clues I had written down for the case to my friends and have them discuss their thoughts and working out who might have been able to do the murder, or at least try to get as far as they could. Then I’d just take their discussion and rewrite it into the trial having certain characters that would have the same thought process as my friends those little discussions and then just plugging in my own conversations to fill in the gaps. It really helps with the struggle of trying to write a mystery when you already know the answer, plus it makes people more excited to see the fangan knowing they were able to kind of be in it themselves.

One of my friends was simping for one of my fangan characters so i "made" a spin off dating sim and we just started joking about it in discord.
Like for example-
"You gotta pay 20 dollars to simp for Atsuaki Eiga"
Hehehehehhe

Also tbh character don’t have to be ultimates mainly because the muder mystery is more important lol
