An Agony of Effort, The True Story of Bloodborne - Part X: The Real Yharnam

It's a common assumption that London served as the primary inspiration for the city of Yharnam. But there's reason to believe another major city from the British Isles helped shape Bloodborne's settings. Although From Software almost certainly borrowed from Prague when designing Yharnam, Edinburgh's fingerprints can be found throughout the city as well.

Never thought Edinburgh would be my next travel destination, but here we are

So interesting, I lived in Edinburgh for years and ALWAYS felt that it HAD to have inspired Yharnam. Great to see some real evidence!

The work you've done is fascinating. I know that from soft didn't intend for us to dig this far and associate lore with the things that inspired the game, but seeing the creative process first hand and seeing exactly what inspired this masterpiece is fascinating to say the least

I know you probably know this already but THANK you so much for making these. Whenever BB comes to PC i'll be revisiting the game under the lens you've provided.

When I was in spoons (I forget which one) I saw a bunch of text talking about the medical history of the city and the building's link to historical figures. I've been listening to this playlist fascinated. Feels so odd to have somewhere "close to home" be so likely linked to a game you love!
Also, learning a lot about history and medicine. Grim stuff but very interesting. I have a newfound appreciation of my quality of life....

My favourite part of this video is that it’s a rare case of an American correctly pronouncing Edinburgh.

I knew it! Yharnam is just Edinburgh! I've never been there, but I haven't decided where to travel next year yet, so I might aswell!

Just wanted to say thank you! The research you've done and the insights you're sharing are incredible! I really am shocked at all of the parallels you are able to make and/or suggest. Absolutely awesome!

Continuing to comment on these as I watch them:
No notes on this one, I think, this all seems pretty spot on. The Church of the Good Chalice in the old town on its own is pretty damning evidence, and the further shared architectural features only solidify it.

I think the connection with the aqueduct/sewers is that they drain down into Old Yharnam, poisoning the residents below. Kinda similar to the placement of Blighttown beneath Undead Burg's sewers

New Town was particularly built to create a new 'Enlightened' Edinburgh. It was built on the new knowledge coming out the University of Edinburgh; Enlightenment principles and science of empiricism and rationality. They wanted to turn Edinburgh into the 'Athens of the North', using neo-classical architecture and order, as they considered the ancient Greeks to have been the closest peoples in history to these empirical and rational values.
Central Yharnam is very much the same. It was built around the University of Byrgenwerth, but instead of Enlightenment knowledge of empiricism and rationality, it is built around the new knowledge and science of the Great Ones. And, instead of the ancient Greeks, they looked towards the Pthumerians, as the were known to have pior contact with the Great Ones.

regarding the hand, it looks awfully like the snatchers', in color and position, theis even accented by how they hold it in front of them its skin contrasted against their dark clothes, just like the painting

Gilbert's dialogue does in fact provide compass-point directions:
"Across the valley to the East of Yharnam lies... the Cathedral ward"
"there's a rather... colourful area South of the great bridge"
