Treat Aiden better or you’ll lose him

Sad to see Gavin couldnt make it this week, but the temp guy they got to fill in for him is pretty good

Imma be honest I would be SO PISSED if I was Aiden

Glad Doug could make it to the podcast on time...

I saw it yesterday and what surprised me the most is these people literally work together on a podcast that they host, again, together, once a week and they don't have one of the host's phone numbers.

I’m glad Aiden knows about the recording schedule for the podcast this week. It would suck if I don’t know his two co-hosts decided to have a interview with the governor of California and didn’t tell him

It's great to see Atrioc and Doug branching out and bringing special guests like Aiden onto Lemonade Stand.

The fact that you fix every issue you cover is amazing! Can you maybe cover my parents marriage next time?

Imagine if Aiden was never called to ask for Doug. There was a chance where Aiden only found out about the interview during this episode!

I actually cannot believe you guys did not tell him that's so mean

Insane they did that Aiden I'd be so pissed

Main correction on Aidan's presentation about Greece.

Greece during the "good times", did save money*, they actually saved a lot of money, they just chose to save money on low risk projects and infrastructure on top of many social welfare programs.

Now going to the *, the great crisis of 2008 for Greece wasn't that they were in debt, it was that their assets were not possible to be liquified at the time, because the assets were either overestimated or fake all together. Coming to the lagard list scandal.

The lagard list scandal is a list of politicians that were responsible for faking the numbers of Greece's assets, progress of investment plans (eg. infrastructure plans etc) and productivity of public sector.
The actual scandal is the fact that this list with the names was "lost" when demanded from European Court for due process but the scandal of faking our economical status is a whole different case in itself.
So when the crisis hit, what Europe has considered as prerequisites for member States to stay afloat, ended up not being existent, even though stated as existing.

Sooooo yeah Greece is a very special shithole (I am from there chill) with a very special case for its economical crisis and I'd say that it's not comparable to any other nation.

lemonade stand with a surprising upset over the yard this week. faster again.

It would be sooooo fucking funny if Aiden somehow went and solo-interviewed Gavin, you gotta make it happen dude

I'm sad that Aiden wasn't on the call to rep Lemonade Stand. Hopefully he is part of whatever next big opportunity y'all get!!

Working on Paper Mario Day? Podcasting really is the hardest job in the world

This Aiden guy is kinda funny, you guys should have him on more often

A little clarification concerning 01:10:10. Atrioc said that Japan's debt-to-GDP ratio is ~240%, and Doug stated "okay, so they're spending way more than they make". Whilst in the case of Japan it's true, this isn't generally an inference that you can make from debt-to-GDP ratio.

We're really talking about the government's income and outgoings.

GDP is the amount of money moving around an economy. It's effectively the pool of taxable money. The inflow of government money is the taxation on its GDP largely (countries usually have some sovereign assets that generate income but usually nothing close to taxes).
The reason why we are more concerned with GDP than tax rev is that it broadly represents a country's capability to raise funds from its economy - if they have a high GDP but a low tax rev due to low taxes, they aren't actually in trouble, they can just put taxes up.

The outgoings of a government include all government spending, including money spent servicing the debt. Debt is normally serviced at interest rate plus a few percent on average. If the interest rate is low, then servicing the debt can be relatively cheap, even if the debt itself is very high.

You could have a goverment with high debt-to-GDP ratio, but a very low interest rate, low non-debt-servicing government spending, and high taxes resulting in a surplus.

In the case of Japan, their interest rate is only 0.5%. It's expected they'll spend ~¥28tn this year servicing a debt of ¥1.35qn, so a rate of just over 2%. ¥28tn is about a quarter of their yearly national budget.

Spending a quarter of your tax rev on servicing debt might be just about manageable, but obviously leaves you with less money to spend on the other services that governments want to provide, and makes it more likely that a country will have to take on new debt to cover all its other expenses.

The real concern for countries like Japan which have a very high debt but "cheap" repayments is that they are practically incapable of raising interest rates. Even putting up interest rates by 2% (which is practically nothing in the greater picture) will probably double the cost of borrowing, which they do a lot of. Debt generally cycles - obviously governments are obligated to pay down current debt, and if they are taking out new debt to make up the budget shortfall caused by servicing the older debt, that new debt will be at the new rate. The result is that the cost of servicing their debt will rapidly increase if they increase their interest rates at all, even if they aren't running a deficit.

The average term on Japanese national debt is just under 10 years. Say for whatever reason (inflation) they had to put their interest rates up to 5% and keep it there, and they were unable to pay down any debt net, in 10 years time half the debt will be on the new rate which would be roughly 3 times higher than the old rate, so their spend on servicing debt would roughly double. Give it another 10 years and almost all the debt will be at the new rate, and spend on servicing debt would have near enough tripled. That clearly just isn't feasible when you're already spending a quarter of your national budget on servicing debt. They would be absolutely cooked as a country.
