In a quiet corner of Üsküdar, Istanbul, lies the trace of one of history's most mysterious and debated communities: Bülbüldere Cemetery. On this extraordinary trip, we closely examined the tombstones, unlike typical cemeteries, bearing porcelain passport photos, enigmatic inscriptions, and symbols. I share the stories hidden in the profound silence of this cemetery, synonymous with the history of Sabbateanism (the Kapancılar branch), through special footage and photographs I captured.

The term "Dönme" (convert) is a term used among the people to refer to the Sabbatean (similar to Marrano) community who, historically, followed Sabbatai Sevi, outwardly converted to Islam but inwardly maintained their own beliefs.

📌 Note: As a historical fact, it's important to remember that not every family that migrated from Thessaloniki had a connection to this community, and that Thessaloniki was a multicultural Ottoman city for centuries. The aim of this video is simply to convey this extraordinary architecture and historical texture to you through the eyes of a city explorer.
