On June 20, 1965, four young friends climbed over a fence in the Nevada desert and descended toward a small pool of warm water known as Devils Hole.

Three entered the water.

Two never came back.

Paul Giancontieri and David Rose disappeared inside the flooded cave system beneath Devils Hole. Search divers followed, but the scale of the place quickly became clear. A weighted line was lowered 932 feet into the darkness — and never touched bottom.

Their bodies have never been recovered.

But depth wasn't the only danger.

The water inside Devils Hole remains at roughly 92°F year-round, creating an underwater environment unlike the cold caves most divers expect. Combined with darkness, extreme depth, limited reference points and basic 1960s diving equipment, the seemingly peaceful pool concealed an extraordinary trap.

This is the story of the 1965 Devils Hole tragedy, the search that followed, and the mysterious flooded abyss beneath one of the driest places in North America.
