Moorecroft was never scared of anyone. The form he was in, even if Coe had raced, I don't think he would have allowed it to be a slow race, he always maximized his form. I was there but as I was mildly(?) obsessed with Ovett, I didn't take in how good Moorecrofts performance until I was walking home - the atmosphere on those nights was electric, the noise from the 17,000 just thunderous. Great find.
Moorcroft was amazing. Sometimes track can be so unforgiving. Moorcroft was injured by the end of 82 and by the 84 Olympics was only a shadow himself and at the same time Eamonn Coghlan was the unbeatable king of the 5km in 83, easily won the world championships, but was nowhere to be found in 84 and Saïd Aouita wins 84. But in an alternate universe just imagine if we got to see Moorcroft in the 82 form and Coghlan in that 83 for face off against Aouita in his 84 form, all in the 84 Olympics 5,000. OMG that would have probably been the most exciting 5,000m race ever run to that point and many years later.
I thought that ovett"s last defeat over 1500/1 mile in 1977 before starting his incredible run of 45 victories was at the hands of Steve Scott. So Scott had beaten Ovett prior to this race but not since 1977.
To answer your question i don't think the ace would hav been slower with a fit Ovett and Coe. Though Moorcroft, Wessinghage and Maree were sub 3:50 milers they didn't have finishing kicks. I don't know what Coe could run for a 3000 but Ovett's 2 mile record is equivalent to a 7:37.00, I think IF he was still with them with 200 to go he would have won and if he did it would have been a world record, Moorcroft and Maree looked like they did all they could do.
Remember in 1978 moorcroft had won commenwealth 1500 and he was talking like he was the best miler in the world ,this was an interview in athletics weekly ,I was 18 at the time and did my on 1500 of 4 15,was angry at the time because I thought overt was the best ,then the European 1500 was after the commenwealth and overt kicked moorcroft to prices coghlen beat moorcroft for silver medal.the only contender to overt was Coe no one else near ,at the end of 1981 December he ran into church railings with his right leg never guide as good after,I liked the man he had to unusual traits first his dyslexia which I have ,and secondly he was left handed.
Could you please cover the 1988 mens 1500m which Rono won? I recall in the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics the BBC doing a series of athletics documentaries, one of which was on the 1500m. Aside from Coe / Ovett etc they commented on this race as unique on the basis IIRC that Rono had gone hard from 2 laps out in a way that hadn't been done before?
Would like to know the reason why in 1982 microdot did 1 46 800 3 49 mile and 3 33 1500 in 1984 he did run a 3 50 mile but was injured for 1984 olympics
Did Wessenhaga ever win one of these races? He seems to feature in every race around this time but never comes anywhere ? Maybe I’m being unfair to him
A case of not letting a supremo miler beat you over a distance that is closer to your own distance of 5000 m in front of a british crowd thats why MooreCroft Won because he wanted it more than Maree.
I think a fit ovett (had thr church railings incident not happened) would have won this or at least have been a major factor. Coe,,, not sure, if it had been slow I think he could have won but not as a true 3k race as this turned out. Buy all just speculation now.... Such a shame those 1982 races didn't happen.
