How hard can it be to start with nothing but the tools on your belt and no dollars in your bank account? Economy Only, No Piracy, only privateering.

I've long wanted to try an Economy only playthrough in Space Engineers and with all the extra NPC stuff out there in vanilla, now seemed like a good time. I'm going to avoid attacking any neutrals and will only take stuff from the bad guys.

NEVER sell platinum to the store. Wait till you get an acquisition contract for it then complete that contract. You missed out on like 4-5 mil because of that

I've just remembered about that one time I wanted to spice up a save by moving a planet and/or exchanging it for a modded one(I can't quite remember), after I had already gotten to a surface trade station on it.
I removed it and placed the new one next to another planet.
The surface trade station was now 2k+ km away from the nearest planet.
Search contracts vary the pay based on the distance from the station.
As a result, the Search contracts for this station were way more difficult, but paid into the billions of credits.

Unfortunately, it looks like to manage the escort mission, you'd need to hire a Capac... Which would cost you a lot more in terms of sandwiches and headaches, than you would earn... And thats if you could stop him from running off for long enough to help you... So yeah, jump drive is definitely the way to go...

I have found that the fastest and easiest way to make money is to sell steel plates until you can get established. Also, acquisition contracts with uranium.

Acquisition missions are good if you decide to go salvaging the "mayday" signals. Acquisition missions have the added benefit of not expiring, furthermore, they don't care how you acquired the components.

That mayday ship my friends found in a world we have and they partially destroyed it and sent it off into space. Another friend came into our world and accidently spawned an a planet away from us, so he died and respawned and that same ship so we told him to fly it back. I now own it after fully rebuilding it and included a full refinery and assembler, and its my fighter ship with 2 artillery guns, and 5 total turrets, and entirely build of heavy armor now. So sad to see it being broken down for parts :( poor ponos

It might be an idea to have an independent survival kit that you can drop off at a safe distance (with a battery, beacon & ions in each direction) and bring your fighter or scout in closer to a potential ambush. That way if something goes wrong (like being cockpit sniped) your chances of recovering it are a little better since you're not risking the survival kit in combat too.

I doubt it'd make a huge difference, but it might've been handy for the escort missions to set up the fighter with AI blocks so it can follow you at a set distance while you're out with your grinder. Getting back into it might be a little bit of a palaver as it may attempt to run away from you, but you can probably outpace it easily, and failing that; an action relay to switch off follow mode is always an option.

Really though, I think escort missions are probably intended for LG ships, and even then the profitability with the ammo and repair cost is still pretty dubious.

Love the series but it bugs the heck out of me that your main ship (the yellow hydrohauler) has a big hole in its cockpit and smoke coming from somewhere.

I feel like the easiest way to make the economy system matter more to the average player would be to make specific components only available by purchase from stations. They already scratched the surface of that by making prototech components only available by raiding factorum stations. I hope they expand on that concept and implement it in SE2.

Escort missions feel like something that might not pay well (according to the description this is a part of corporate conflict, which makes the drones being space pirate faction craft interesting) but would give a ton of reputation - which would be helpful if, y'know, the reputation system was easy to see anywhere. If anything gets fully reworked with the coming cargo ship update, I would hope part of it is that - and, as well, possibly some physical hauling contracts with the standardized containers, would be nice. And just hauling at all - a 'some stations produce, some stations demand, per resource' system would be cool. Make some things super valuable but rare, other things pay more in bulk, make it specific items that aren't always necessarily useful so you have to engage with the economy rather than producing them yourself. Easy-ish enough.

That first PONOS encounter ship is a really old design and you can find the original projection on the steam workshop. It's a great little ship if you gut out the conveyor line that goes from the hydro tanks in the back to the hydro generators towards the front and replace it with a row of small cargo containers, it also provides plenty of conveyor branches. I think the original blueprint is called the Ponos-F1. When they first changed the random encounters for the survival update i'd often look for that ship in specific because half the time there's no drones protecting it so you can basically jetpack right in side and take it over as if it's yours.
