SOUTH-EAST ASIA's BEST EX-PAT HAVEN? Kampot, Cambodia 🇰🇭 4K

Seeker of the Way

With its magnificent French colonial old town, cafes, pubs, creative culture, relaxed vibe, & gorgeous riverside setting Kampot is an ideal spot to spend an extended stay. After the Khmer Rouge times Kampot was a sleepy crumbling place - which was how it was when I first went there. When Chinese money started taking over nearby Sihanoukville ex-pats left & relocated en masse to Kampot sparking a rejuvenation & cultural blossoming. In this episode of Seeker of the Way we check out what's going on in Kampot & if it's still the best place in Cambodia to chill out long term for creative ex-pats. Come along for a bumpy ride.

Just arrived 2 weeks ago. Compared to 8 years ago it is much cleaner and the food quality improved a lot! Laid back, easy, friendly people, good mix of locals, tourists, backpacker & expats!

I first went to Cambodia in 2008, and it was the most extraordinary place I'd ever been. My mouth was open the entire time. I went back in 2009, and took a trip to Kampot. Back then it was a sleepy riverside town, with really no nightlife. I went back in 2015 and the town had completely changed. Lots of expat bars, and restaurants. It really had lost some of its charm, but with all of the French architecture it still is a very charming place.

I lived there around 7 years ago for 4 months and first time visited there in 2000. Places always change. Living there I found it rather nice to explore areas around there and there is nice nature with no people about but socially I found it rather not interesting as the local expats life tends to revolve around bars ( I don't drink) and the local Khmer although friendly enough I tried and failed to make any lasting connections. Actually I would prefer to live in PP rather than Kampot as its more interesting. I also found the food to be rather expensive if you want to eat some quality. The architecture is quite nice and if passing thru as you are its a great stop along the way...

Thanks for your video. I visited there for the first time a few days ago and will be moving there next month to check it out as a more permanent place to live. I found Kampot to be fairly inviting with a more "up and coming" vibe too. Looking forward to being there.

I enjoyed your video and I like your mellow delivery. Quite pleasing. My wife and I will be visiting Kampot later this year. Looking forward to it.

This reminds me of a Gabriel Traveler video. Nice work. 👍

I was there in 2003 and there was already an ex pat community. Tourists, hotels and some foreign owned restaurants and bars on the waterfront.

Your presentation makes sense. I came here too with bus from Phnom Penh 10 years ago. There were quite a few hotels and guesthouses then but not that many food places. Tha place was lovely then. And is was catered to by european teachers and the like.

Great video, I wanted to ride to Kampot back in 2023, but the road from Sihanoukville, East of the Veal Renh Roundabout, was so bad that I turned around and went to Phnom Penh instead. I was on a Kawasaki Z900; if I were on a dual sport, I would have completed that trip.
